I think we are coming to the end of the era of N/A ICE sportscars with a manual box and was looking for something raw to add to my road collection as the DB4 is not road legal.

I tried an Atom and BAC Mono, then by chance came across this GT40 replica. With my Le Mans connections it’s seemed to fit the bill so went to see it for a test drive........

Frack me! 430bhp with less than a tonne to propel. No ABS, power steering, traction control or driver aids whatsoever. Just a huge pushrod V8, 5 speed manual box and rose jointed suspension. This is not some cheap and nasty kit car with a Q plate, but a CAV factory built replica with no expense spared and a proper 1960’s age appropriate registration.

Zero practicality but probably the most exciting thing I have driven on the road ever. Made my DB4 seem civilised and slow. Think I’m hooked and waving goodbye to best part of £100k next week!

Looks well done. Right hand gear change, those Avons are a nice tyre, if you’re used to Dunlop’s on the DB4 you’ll be amazed, especially in the wet. looks like proper knock ons too.

Is it a Ford 302?

Yes proper centre lock knock ons, and all the right interior fittings and instruments. Engine is a Ford 331ci stroker V8 , ATK High performance short block, Scat 331 stroker kit, Forged pistons, Comp Cam and roller rockers with Holley carburettor, Edelbrock Victor performance inlet manifold and aluminium Heads, Ceramic coated bundle of snakes cross over exhaust system with Magnaflow stainless steel back boxes giving 430 BHP at the flywheel.

It’s a brute with heavy steering and clutch, but I think I’ve just become a wimp used to power assistance and paddle shift. Boy you feel you’ve been concentrating once the drive is over, but so exhilarating!

lovely looking machine and sounds/looks like an extremely well built one, seems that all the replica GT40's hold their prices really well

There's a guy somewhere near me who has a one. Was on display at a village show a few years ago.

As I automatically assumed it was a kit car, I asked how much it cost to build.
When he told me 70 grand I almost passed out!

Then he started it up! Oh. My. Word! Sounded absolutely brutal!
He said then it was 'about' 450bhp.

Sounds like it could be similar type car. I bet it's never been driven in the rain! :rofl5:

That is a lovely thing, I hope you push the button....... I would if I could.

A business acquaintance of mine has a genuine Ford GT (they couldn’t use the 40) its for sale at the moment, that pushes 700bhp and I imagine is un drivable.

A completely different car, but I had a recreation / replica of an Aston DBR1 - too quality hand built car - not a kit car. I loved it but did spend a lot of time and eventually got fed up of answering the question “is it a real one?” or is that a “kit car”.

A very good friend of mine owns a GT40 and is very much involved in the club, including competition.

Would be happy to put you in touch if you want to drop me a pm.

That's beautiful!! I am soooooo envious. The GT40 is my ultimate favourite car and it's not even Italian!!
45 years ago my brother and I had a hot wheels track and we both owned various Matchbox cars. He had the fastest car called 'Old McDonald', it was never beaten!!....... Then one day I bought a Metallic orange GT40, It was the first time I had seen one and I fell in love with it!! I called it 'Speedy Gonzalis'. It turned out to be the new fastest car! My brother wasn't impressed so when I wasn't there he put it in between two bricks and that was the end of that!! (nice older brother). Years later he bought me this fantastic model to make up for it...

This was a great gesture but I still missed 'Speedy'......... I have been searching ever since trying to replace him, on ebay and everywhere but to no avail!....... Then, about a month ago I happened across a toy antique shop in Ross-On-Sea (where I thought I Saw @Lozzer as a beautiful met green 3200 drove past as I was entering the shop (wasn't Loz though) and my search was over!!

Looks glorious. I met Eric Broadley once at Castle Donnington. My brother and I were in the T590 surrounded by F1 drivers and big full fat race cars. 5 laps of terror and ruined the road tyres. His Mk 6 went on to rule the world in GT40 guise, but the eponymous high points came in the 90’s in Indycar. Would love to see Lola revived.

Hope you get it - a proper present to yourself though...

I have two friends who have GT40’s.
One has a Gtd replica with an original gurney Weslake engine and it’s a non road legal race car kept at Ascari. The other has a CAV road legal car , both are in gulf spec colours.
I have been a passenger in the race car and it’s epic, they are fantastic fun but a struggle to live with on the road (which is why one car became a race car).
Air con is an absolute must for the road car as the interior gets very very hot.
The fuel tanks are in each side and you sit snuggled right next to one whichever side of the car you sit.
I think they are awesome and alongside the Lola t70 are 2 of my favorite cars.
There is a reputable guy called Frank Catt who looks after loads of them in the UK and it may be worth getting it inspected by someone who knows these cars and what parts are good and bad .

Eric deserves more recognition. Is Enzo Italian for Eric?
