4200 / Spyder rear Antenna

Hi all,

As I'm looking to buy a Maserati Spyder, I'm encountering a lots of different car models and versions (MY02, MY03, etc..).

I've noticed differences in the rear antenna. Sometimes the car has a rear antenna ant sometimes not. This seems not be dependent on the car version, as for examples I've seen MY02 models with and without.

Now my question is as follow:

Why is this possible? What are the differences between the following points:

  1. long antenna on the rear left side
  2. small centered antenna on the rear of the car
  3. no antenna at all

Thank you in advance,

Regards,

Mario

Early 4200 had a bee sting aerial on the rear of the car.

Latet models have duel aerial one in the front screen and one in the rear screen controlled by a diversity box.

Single aerial on the roof of the car was as far as im aware for the telephone system if it was fitted as an option.

Tricky on a Spyder....

C

Very true. I was speed reading and missed the word spyder.

Small centred one on the spyder i assume is for the carphone kit if fitted and uses the front screen one for radio reception.

The DVLA seem to think a fair number of coupes are spyders for some reason.

Thank you for the reply ! I suspected that the small antenna in the center was linked to the phone kit (optional).
However I'm still confused about the fact that sometimes the "radio" antenna is on the rear left, and sometimes is not there at all. Does this mean that early 2002 have the antenna in the rear, and then they "improved" the design by removing it on other models?

I think from late 2003 / early 2004 is when they removed the radio aerial on the rear wing and used the one they had added to the front windscreen. Which would be the cars with no external aerial unless they had a phone kit.

As above. The 2004 MY cars have a revised radio receiver which deleted the need for the antenna.

The rear wing aerial on my 4200 Coupe is also the car phone aerial too.
Maybe old tech 2G, but actually used it yesterday, the signal reception is superb with a proper aerial mounted on the steel bodyshell.

The boot mounted aerial can be quite handy - an otherwise forgotten walking stick was snared, stayed put, and later recovered despite motorway speeds for approx. 50 miles. No damage to paintwork either. A wing aerial would need a lot of practise to be as lucky

My March 2003 Spyder does not have the wing aerial bit it is the update model with the glass rear window etc.
Funny, my March 2003 Spyder GT (US spec) has the wing aerial.
Just to ask, does your car have the plastic fuel cap, or the solid aluminum one?

Indeed it makes no sense. My first 4200 was registered in May 2003 but a 2004 MY car... I guess it may all be down to the shell and colours left at the production date... I have even seen a GS with the latter antenna .
