Where is the code for the colour of the leather

Hi, I have a black 4200 (the one that Dwight York used to own, but don’t hold that against me) . The leather has been treated to a partial renovation that hasn’t been done very well. I want to finish the job but don’t know the colour designation. I just thought it was cream so recoloured the drivers seat hoping it would match. Guess what it didn’t and although the seat looks magnificent it’s still the wrong colour. Can anyone tell me how I would find the colour code? It’s cream with a hint of yellow in it. Thanks in anticipation, neil

I had my cream coloured leather repaired. The repairer did an excellent job. Think you need to find a good repairer.

Repairing leather is a skill, you'll need to find someone who is good at what they're doing. The video below will give you an idea of why having a colour code is less helpful than having someone good at their job.

I cut off a sample from out of sight position and sent to an eBay supplier to make up a colour match. Worked a treat and I was able to make a decent repair to the driver’s seat bolster. I suspect your colour is Avorio.

eBay seller was “leatherdye”. The only issue you may have that I didn’t is trying to reverse what was done before; sorry can’t help you much on that front but you may need to remove that finish first - not sure how but pretty sure it can be done.

Good luck.

Likewise my 4200 seats had the usual bolster wear issue. A guy round the 'corner from Emblem' took a look at the car and matched it using swatches. He told me that is is the only way that they can do this, as leather ages and fades in the sun. What started out as factory standard is completely different 15 years later.

Thanks all for your input. the colour I put on is about 2 shades lighter, so I don’t forsee an issue with redying it A darker shade. It turned out so well but that’s the way it goes. The centre cubby box lid isn’t screwed down so I think I’ll send it off to get an exact match. I model miniatures so am used to airbrush work etc and I think this helped me a lot. The main thing to have is patience!

So the recolour saga continues. I found a different bottle of cream leather Dye and a leather restoration kit in my garage today. Added some yellow and a good daub of brown. Not an exact match but getting there, patience is the key. I think a smidgen Of red will be added tomorrow. The seat looks well but I’ll have to remove the gloss effect as it looks too shiny. First and last pics are Of the seat a work in progress and the other ones are of the state I got the car in. The headrest is not in shade that’s just poor workmanship . I’m glad I’m perfect! (Not). More pics of the ongoing saga tomorrow I hope it doesn’t all go titsup!

Remove the rear armrest and cut an inch square off the tucked excess.

post it to The Furniture Clinic and they will match it.

Thanks very much. The seats have turned out really well, I think that the previous colouring was so bad that it made the parts of the seats that I done look way off. However when compared to the rear seats they look spot on. I’m just going to have to do the Front seat sides as that’s all that is left of the previous colourant. Oh and yes I did use cream with yellow I guess all that mixing of strange paint schemes on models has stood me in good stead. I’ll finish the seats and then post how I did it from start to finish. Thanks again, neil
