Hello everyone and Happy New Year! (bit late)

My wipers have started juddering on intermittent setting and when its doing it I can hear a relay clicking somewhere down in the passenger footwell. I guess its a faulty relay! ... but before I go and buy a replacement just wanted anyones thoughts... It doesnt judder on slow and fast speeds just on intermittent and its not the blades.

Cheers

Bloody **** that's a blast.

Yes, it's stuffed basically. Temp fixes will be that.

Hmm I'll have a look at the wiper assembly after I've replaced the relay I think. I behaves like an electrical issue as there is a click for each "judder" and its not doing it on slow or fast speed.

Mine did that until I treated the screen to some sort of hyper-aquaphobic sealant...
This should imply that there's less water on the screen, just to contradict the theory postulated above.... Water beads and runs off withoput drag or leaving residual moisture as it moves. I dont need wipers over @30mph.(Its better not to imo) The (new) wipers glide smoothly over the glass now too...!

Mine judders somewhat too had the problem since I bought the car 4 years ago.

Improvements made when I replaced the wipers with fresh ones... Also I removed my wiper arms to respray them and when refitted the judder became quite a lot less

I recently found out that there is supposed to be a plastic clip from factory between the wiper arm and blade which increases the tension on the blade and thus eliminates the judder. The clip is extortionate so apparently you can use a cable tie or change to the modern aero wipers.

Also what Tim suggested is a good idea I did similar and it provided lasting results

My current wiper blades are now 4 years old and have lost their effectiveness in the rain so i will be replacing them with the aero ones because I'm not spending £50 on two plastic clips nor will I put cable ties somewhere that is so obviously visible

I'm aware of that product I was going to get that done anyway as it worked well on our other car ... The one that I dont care about :)

You can also try applying WD40 to your blades, this can make them run smoother..............Worth a try!!

I can recommend that how-to above. I did it myself before Christmas, having had exactly the same symptoms, and it fixed it entirely for me. It wasn't that hard to do either. Worth trying certainly in my view. 12 years worth of gunk and old grease now replaced with new clean grease and all is fine.

I didn't have the 'juddering' but found the blades cover was not so even in dirty conditions. So I tried the WD40 and it cleared it up instantly without any residue.................Still going strong now about 3 months later after the first and only application!

Well, you learn something everyday, first thought this was a wind up, or is it, and I'm just being slow!

In honesty I recall with my 4200 I tried numerous tricks to fix the judder. Everyone kept telling me as it was a far more common issue (far more 4200s around)
If it were my car, I'd simply sway the wiper motor.

Worth checking the spindle where the wiper arm is connected. See if there is any play/movement on the spindle this will cause the judder. If there is, it's caused by the wiper motor support broken. Its the top left one normally broken by somebody trying to manoeuvre the wiper motor when replacing the pollen filter and not aware there is a 3rd bold hidden.

Sheesh! A three-minute video to say, "put some WD40 on your wiper blades".

Although the comments section is quite good.

I'm not doing it!
