Buying a car from a private seller

I am thinking about buying another run about, but the car I am interested in is a long way from where I live. I have paid for an inspection from an independant mechanic, (never bought a car without inspecting it myself first, so that's a new one) If i decide to buy it, I will get it transported to me by a third party such as 'Shiply' or someone, as the cost of that is less than I would lose by not working for a day. So how would I go about paying for it? it's a private seller, and I would be very reluctant to transfer the funds, before the car is picked up, as they could just keep the money and the car? Any suggestions as to a safe way of going about this.

Worth asking if they would deliver the car? Then you can transfer the money when they get to you and you are happy

Have a day out with a couple of your mates, drive the car around the block, if your happy with everything, just divvy up the guy and drive it home, its not rocket science..

Lots of cash in your back pocket always works well with sellers if your looking for a bargain!

Get it dropped off at your nearest trusted SM member. Confirm its there and paid for it then. Shiply et al can collect later.

Obviously I could take the route of not work for a day, I do it often enough!, just considering if there was a viable alternative, had a quote of £200 to have it trailered home, that alone is less than i would lose for days income, then train fare is around £80, fuel for journey home say £40 or £50, I live on my own 10 miles from nearest station, so finding someone to take me to station can be difficult, so just thought I'd investigate weather there was a another option.

Do you work 7 days a week, if not, then I'd go up on a weekend.

Otherwise as @Scaf mentioned, pay a deposit and the rest on delivery. Though, I'd I was the seller I would probably want all the money after it was taken.

I've met a guy halfway before.

Can you meet somewhere on the M40?

Thanks for the offers chaps, still not sure if I'm going to buy it yet, test drove an alternative yesterday (Kia Sportage) what **** visibility, no wonder it had a scratch on every corner, so I'll write that one off.

The Shiply guys are good, what I do is pay a deposit then ask the Shiply guy to have a look over the car, check docs and then once given the all-clear transfer the rest of the funds via banking app.

Car's in Coventry, I'm in Dorset
I went from warrington to lincoln for a £500 berlingo van , we made a weekend of it , train over, drunk on gin in a slug & lettuce, night in a holiday inn , missed breakfast because gin, had a day in lincoln, picked it up, drove home

Much more fun than working

I'm just down the road from Coventry, if I can be of any help give me a shout!

You could leave it at the workshop

I have used Cyd Williams for exactly this. Cyd runs his own flatbed delivery and recovery. He is meticulous and trustworthy and has handled several of my cars and trucks.
He also does work for Charles Partos at 51st State Autos.
He has in the past finalised deals for me.
I haven't been in touch for a couple of years but he's worth a call if he's still in business.
