Thermostat / sensor and rad clean

Since I was changing the coolant i thought I’d might as replace the stat and temp sensor, much harder than it sounds due to lack of access, (needs a deep 19mm socket for sensor) allow for skinned knuckles and plenty cursing.

Also cleaned the space between ac condenser and coolant rad, this was fully of 13yrs worth of flies, bird corpses and leaves, definitely worth doing and hopefully will preserve the rads for a few more year.
As usual all bolts so wasted they all needed cut off, think I’ll replace with stainless...

Stat is maz part I’m afraid, make sure you order uk one as the US version has additional ‘hole’ for another sensor, should be like in pics.

coolant bottle is same as fiat ducato or doblo I think.

saw your post on the temp sensor, it is a pain to reach!

cheers Greg

Cheers Greg, il drop Ross an email, and get one sorted. I don't think mine is playing up, but thought if im in there, then why not, as its another job ticked. I can see where the extra hole would go on your picture
I already have header tank from a Doblo that I have modified, so its ready to fit. Also need to fit that new heatshield for the Euro spec headers that goes under the sump. Iv worked on VX220's/Elises, so tight spaces are fine as I have girly hands.

I did the temp sensor by removing the off side wheel (UK) which gave good access - I just got a little stuck because I couldn't locate the sensor itself as it was getting dark and I had worked continuously for about 3 hours but once I knew which bit I was looking at it was quite easy

Iv managed to get the plug off of it, but I don't have a 19mm socket that will fit, as my deep one has too small a diameter on the inside to fit over the plug.

I used a 19mm deep impact socket and it did the trick. If you live any where near Farnborough you can borrow it :)

Thankyou, but im not nearby. I have however borrowed a 19mm Crowsfoot, so hoping that will do the trick. Going to use the opportunity to do a coolant change also

Wow, you're certainly getting to know your GS!

Was it just the radiator weep that prompted you to start the job?
No, not really, its just sort of snowballed! When it had its inspection at emblem they picked up that there was a bit of play in one of the front upper wishbone ball joints, and as the front tires are badly worn on the inner edge I want to get the alignment done, but there's no point doing that with worn components, so got the joint sent from America as cheaper than over here! and when dropped the front undertray there was a very slow drip of coolant. so thought, 'oh well might as well do that', also bought the last set of forum discs and a set of **** stainless flexi brake lines, as well as a set of bellows for the steering rack as they were showing signs of perishing, and you know what its like, as your working on a certain area of the car you might as well do other things as you have already got it apart. Of course the hard brake lines broke when taking off the old flexis, so they have had to be replaced, also treated any corrosion on the subframe with 'Fertan' rust converter, followed by satin black hammerite, and then sprayed with underseal with added Waxoyl. Was going to try and do the rad without taking the bumper off, but then noticed flakes of rust on the splitter, obviously dislodged by other works, so knew what that was likely to be, so off came the bumper, and the bumper support bar had turned to dust, so I have had to make a new one of those. the front is starting to go back together now, and then on to the rear, for new brakes, handbrake cable and free up the track control arms in preparation for its allignment, allong with 3 new tyres so i will have a matching set of Goodyears. I am also 'de stickying 'the interior, and have had the center dash vent and the door handle shrouds carbon dipped. I am also trying to do a refurb on one of the front wheels which has obviously been replaced as the inner face is a different colour to the rest and badly coroded. I also sent the front anti roll bar to be powder coated as it was going a bit rusty.

Drained the fluid this morning, and changed the sensor through the wheel arch with a crowsfoot. Rigged up an entry and exit with hosepipes, and flushed water through it, raised and lowered the car abit, and blew through the pipes to makesure as much fluid was out as possible. So job for the weekend is fit new header tank, and filler her up, and hope for the best.
