ZF AUTO WON'T CHANGE GEAR WHEN COLD

On a couple of very cold evenings, recently, I have had the 'MSP Failure' light come on and the gearbox seems to refuse to change up. So as I accelerate, the revs go up and no gear changes take place. Sliding the gear lever over into manual works fine, and I can do manual gear-changes (no flappy paddles on mine). Problem goes away when a bit warmer, with a restart. Thoughts?

Is the gearbox cold or warm?

Warm - check the level

Cold - check the level or seal in the valve block has gone so there’s no oil in there when it’s been sitting.

If I remember rightly you’re local. Speak to Doug at Auto Trans in Gloucester. He diagnosed and sorted the ZF on my Alpina when others couldn’t.

Flushing oil, changing all seals made a whole load of difference to mine, yours might be burnt fluid. I did post a thread a year ago.

Think I have seen similar on a Porsche Boxster before. Manual ok, auto no change. Oil and filter change sorted it.

Although it is often over simplified, Wheeler Dealers did a ZF gearbox with similar shifting issues. As others have said, a oil change and new filter sorted it.

I seem to remember that. That was a boxster too wasn't it? Never know what additionals they do that they don't show.
