Where can you just get unbiased honest information from as I'm fed up of the lot of them ?

The first trick is to ask who's telling you something then. They you have a chance of understanding their motivation. Then go look for something provided by someone with an opposing view. Then make up your mind.

Still not straight forward with duff information on both sides though.

Which is sort of exactly where I didn't want to go.
It would have been really easy for me to rubbish it out of hand, since I work in the industry and am pretty confident I know WTF I'm talking about.

But yes, fair call :D

So The Government want to have total control of the UK internet.... No problems I can see there then: Oh wait, they wouldn't restrict content now would they? Control media now would they? Track usage now would they? I cannot think of anywhere in the world this might happen already???

Except China/North Korea/......... ad nausium

A lot of Government services have moved, and more are moving, online. 4G was, and 5G, is supposed to replace wired connections. The problem is that, as with wires, rural rollout isn’t as profitable and so you end up with the cities leading and rural economies suffering.

A proper digital infrastructure strategy is well overdue. Whether this is achievable is questionable but relying on the market will always mean that rural areas will be left behind.

It is a lot more forward thinking than looking to restore 19th century transport links.

If large scale manufacturing is dead the the real alternative is a knowledge based economy or similar specialities. These would be well served, countrywide, by ubiquitous fast broadband. It may also help address the town v country and north v south (Home Counties v rest of the country) divides.

I don’t see it as a vote swaying measure but it should be welcomed.

Hmm. I agree that there needs to be widespread broadband provision. The issue I have with it as stated is
  1. The costs are way off beam
  2. The assumption of funding by 'tech' tax is (as yet) unfounded, in that it's not been proven any such tech tax can be implemented, and even if it was implemented, what the actual result would be
  3. As stated it would, I think, pretty much destroy competition in the broadband market. Which of itself is not a bad thing, but the knock on impact of companies such as Virgin (at least potentially) pulling out does not appear to be considered.]

It appears that BT's share price has been knocked by a couple of percent just on the basis of that announcement. Sure it'll recover in time, however.

FWIW the rural railways things sounds like a non-starter as well, also undercosted, although from what I can see there was no indication of full reversal.

Tow-paths! FFS, how hard is it. If you want to connect the country then make sure we have a national network of canals, tow-paths, places to re-fuel your horse and so on.

Honestly, the parlous state of our economy in the coming years will welcome a return to a robust, unhackable communications infrastructure.

Anyone want to buy some hay?

Sounds good to me, and stocks on the village green. Oh and a village idiot, we seem to have a fair few of them.

A return to more simple times. And a forum full of simple people is the right place to start our new electoral campaign.

Roll on the Industrial Revulsion!

Fascinating. According to the new now, Labour hope to come to an agreement with the competitors. If not they may nationalise them as well.

Blimey.

Small other point. Why fibre to the house? Even I don't have that (cable only) and it's plenty fast enough. In fact I have to keep telling Virgin that I won't pay any more for a higher speed.....
