QPV GTS - Rear Parking Sensor Fault

Hi all,

Rear parking sensors a few weeks back started playing up intermittently - sometimes they'd operate normally, other times they'd default to a constant warning tone/showing as 'red' on the dashboard (which I believe is typical when the sensors aren't working). Now they're permanently not working/getting a constant tone whenever I stick the car into reverse.

I swear I've got some paperwork to suggest some of the sensors have been changed at some point. In the meantime, anything obvious to look into and check?

Cheers.

Start by giving them a good clean if you haven’t already....which you probably have done....

Mine went last week too! Am I bothered? Not really but I want a straight car so yes I am.

One faulty one appears to have short circuited the whole lot of them.

i couldn’t possibly think any less of you! :D
Oh dear, someone’s been at the red wine again ;)

When I was diagnosing this same issue for my other car, it was suggested that I listen for a quiet, high pitch ‘clicking’ from each of the sensors with someone in the car, reverse selected and naturally with their foot on the brake. Logically the duff sensor(s) would be quiet and not clicking.

So between that and washing the car hopefully I can make some progress.

I tried that - didn't work. Mine don't work 90% of the time in the cold weather like now, and do work 100% of the time in the warm weather, I've no idea....

I think this is a bumper off job and I think I have read somewhere that a Skoda sensor is the same part - but of course that could just be the red wine speaking!

you are not wrong: I had autoficcina replace a few faulty sensors earlier this year but I’m afraid I can’t remember exactly which ones, sorry. Remember I left a few sensors in the central glovebox in small white boxes? It wasn’t a bumper off job as they can get their hands up behind, unless of course you are unlucky and it’s one of the unreachable ones. You can buy a parking sensor tester through eBay if you don’t have a friendly assistant to help with the clicking sound.

None of mine make a clicking noise! Much unusual. What is not surprising is the day before they died the car was driving in torrential rain!

Let me see this weekend if mine 'click'.

Incidentally, like you, the Parking sensors on BMW which are always dicky actually work when it's >25 degrees outside. I had a week or two in summer when they were back to normal, albeit temporarily... strange.

Update - Autofficina was kind to confirm the previous offender as the rear RH inner sensor, which was subsequently replaced.

However, with mrs.Makeshift in the car today and reverse selected it appears it's the same sensor that doesn't click... was a bit of a challenge as it's almost impossible to hear anything next to the exhaust. I went back in the car to turn sports mode off thinking it was on, and actually it was already off :)

Back to the garage, I guess.
