Folks,

Want to get my GranTurismo air con re-gassed. Was just gonna book into local Kwik Fit but when I put registration in it gave the message below regards gas type, I never even knew there was different types.

Can anyone confirm please ?

It is R134a without doubt. It is only more recent cars that are charged with R1234yf.

£150 to gas the Ghibli last week! R1234yf is not easy to find at your local garages...

Thanks gents, from googling (as it actually took me by surprise as I didn’t realise there were two different types) I got same story that it’s fairly recent the new stuff came along.

More environmentally the new stuff by the looks of it?

Will get booked in for a re-gas

Yes. R1234YF has a global warming potential of 4 (and some studies are now saying it’s less than 1). R134a a whopping 1430.

It’s a lot better!

Afraid not.

The components in the R134a system are designed to work with an A1 “non-flammable” refrigerant.

R1234yf is a A2L “mildly flammable” and so there will be specific design adaptations to prevent potential flash points.

That might change in the future with more testing. However as R1234yf has a latent heat of evaporation about 27% less than R134a there can be a loss of capacity depending on the size of the heat exchangers in the system.
