£20k budget, Year of your birth car, what would you buy?

All

I have a friend who is coming upto his 50th birthday, and his wife has asked me and some of his other friends for help in buying him a special present.

As a family, they have recently sold all their shares in a business my mate helped to set up and grow over the last 25 years, so they are not poor (by any stretch). This, plus the fact it is his 50th, means the idea she has come up with is to buy him a vintage car from ideally the year he was born (or certainly within 1-2 years each side). She has set a suggested budget of £20k, and he was born in early 1970.

So, what would you buy?

This is one of my suggestions (slightly breaking the budget!) https://classics.autotrader.com/classic-cars/1970/chevrolet/camaro/101141033

Great idea! Depends what he would enjoy driving most but MG or Land Rover are the obvious choices around that budget and some great ones around.

Personally I would look for a Series 1 Jaguar XJ but finding a decent one of those is a little harder.

1986 911 Targa, this one is in budget somehow but it looks like a slight project https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1142051

Maybe a Porsche 928 S4.... drive around like I am Tony Montana (it was the hero car from Scarface)...

Either way drive around in my porker looking like an 80's hot shot... boat shoes, white chinos, silk shirt, ray bans...

Car and Classic is a great site for me to point her to, and then she can browse by era and by budget... good tip!

TR6.

I've got one and having owned a number of classics this is by far and away the most sensible. Parts aplenty, good owners network and in budget.

Engine is strong enough to have some fun in and tour.

The Ferrari 512BB came out in 1973. I'd have one of those.
However, I suspect I'd need to put a 1 or a 2 in front of the £20,000 figure.

Bit of fun, great idea for your mates 50th too.
Had a quick browse on C&C at cars in that price range, from my birth year. Here's the 3 I came up with!

Landrover of that era (on a new chassis no doubt) would be a great shout for the budget... Or maybe a big old Merc sedan. A VW camper (strange that is on my mind) would be a splitty from 70 and probably out of reach for one worth having. Karmen Ghia is a great shout.
