ASR, unable to select blah blah every day more frequent, when cold

The strad has been great for 3 years now. I only use it 2 or 3 times a month, and I am progressively seeing more of the Tesco Xmas tree lights. Either "unable to select gear" or "ASR" both with the go to dealer thingy.

Always cold, never warm. Battery replaced two months ago, Yuasa. CTEK MX5 charger on all the time.

Ideas?

I think you are going to have to plug it in. Gear unavailable could be the potentiometers, but the ASR is a new one on me.

Thanks ZEP. AFAIK ASR is the stability control.

I had the f1 fluid flushed and changed about 8 months ago... maybe a factor regarding gear not available..

I had some of these problems with mine. Two things that may have made a difference:

  1. Disconnecting the CTEK a while (a few hours/overnight) before using the car - seemed to reduce the incidence of ASR / ESC unavailable, Park Off - which was occurring even with a brand new battery installed.
  2. Took it for its four year service to Graypaul Birmingham who apparently reset the warnings and claim to have updated some ECU software to the latest version. Since then (for two weeks) I have not had any recurrence of the errors, even when the car has been off the CTEK for a week.

Fortunately not yet seen the gear unavailable message.

Much appreciated Tokyomb! Please pipe up should those messages appear again. Will try to remove my CTEK the night before using to see if the same voodoo works.

I am no expert, but I would think there is some sensor fault somewhere. So a full SD x diagnostic analysis at the minimum is required, otherwise you will be shooting in the dark trying one thing then another.

Strangely enough I get a fault message on my BMW when I drive it after leaving it on the trickle charger ?

I find these issue come with lack of use.

Le Mans this year I was stopped at the side of the A3 with no gears and no accelerator pedal, coasted to a stop.

Battery reset and it did it one more time the next day. A hickup flash the next day then nothing since.

They hate being stood unused.

Some follow up. I have only taken her out once, but removing the charger the night before seems to have done the trick, strange as it seems.

I would guess that the voltage regulation parts of those respective computers is not very good, in that it only likes a small range of input voltage: too low, or too high, and it complains.

Glad to hear that my suggestion has made a difference (and even more that it wasn’t just some figment of my imagination)!

My QP is very intolerant of changes in the weather until car warms up, drove to France and now to Ireland in it, in lovely hot weather, this week cos it’s cooled off car is really sulky till engine warms up. It’s not as bad as some older cars I’ve had with lump cold idle, it’s just a bit less smooth on clutch changes and sometimes the odd fierce one for no reason. After car has warmed up all is nice and bonny...

Must be cos she caught me looking at Aston Martin Rapide pics.....
