The stance is lacking a little something but the original rims are more attractive, I agree..
I even dig that weird Gandini wheel arch...!
No one wants to hear how I dont like old man hickory and 5hag pile interiors...Nothing a bit of carbon fibre, or better yet, brushed aluminium inserts woudnt fix..!
Just as well I cant afford to buy one and mutilate it I suggest ...!

Not sure I'm a huge fan of the aftermarket wheels but if it means you can fit bigger/better brakes then fair play...
The wheels are OZ Futuras, the same as fitted to the Ghibli Kit Sportivo of the same period.

Might be just my tired eyes but is there a bigger dish on the rears on the Shamal?
Oh- for sure..
The Oz Futura might be the design faithful but the offset (presumably) and dish on the OP Shamal is out there....!:as002:

Yes the rear wheels on that Shamal are obviously wider than those of the OZ Futuras fitted to the Ghibli KS. They were available in various sizes, widths and fitments and were also original fitment on the Lotus Esprit S4 and some early V8s. On a similar note, the Ghibli Cup Speedline Alessios were also available in various sizes, widths and fitments as this Shamal demonstrates

I always though the Shamal looked a bit underwhelming in the wheel department, the design is nice but the 16” wheels look a bit lost in the arches. I’m sure it would upset the purists but I rather like this example:

For those who prefer the original wheels: This is a photoshop but it shows how the Shamal could have looked if the original wheels were a little bigger:

There was however, a tragic example in Holland some years ago that was “rollin’ on 20s” as the yoof might say. I believe that car may now have been rescued and relieved of its hoops and graphics ☹️ I think it remains in its non-original colour though:

Do quite like the Cup wheels. If I had one (and the money to do this) I’d probably look into a bespoke, bigger brake setup. If I remember correctly (I’m sure you’ll correct me ;) )they’re one-pot callipers on the Shamal which didn’t quite feel up to the job when driven quickly…

Correct, the standard calipers are single piston and there is plenty of room for improvement. TarOx make a brake upgrade kit with 6 piston calipers but it’s quite expensive. The 4 piston Brembos from a QPiv V8 would probably bolt straight on, that’s certainly the case with the Ghibli which has effectively the same underpinnings. Having said that the Shamal is more closely related to the first series Ghibli and probably has a different pcd to the MY94 Ghibli and QPiv so you’d probably have to use first series Ghibli discs which would give a slight increase in disc size compared to the standard Shamal discs. The QPiv V8 rears are twin piston and would probably also bolt straight on. The Ghibli Cup shares the same setup with 4 piston fronts and twin piston rears.

Looks aside how would you rate/compare again the ghibli II?

Is the appreciation a reflection of the development of the vehicle or the gorgeous looks?
I prefer the Shamal. When I walked into the garage and had the choice of taking out the Shamal or my Ghibli Cup, the Shamal won every time. Both had very similar bhp and performance, but the Shamal had a far nicer driving position for someone of my height/physique, which in turn meant a better driving experience.
But now, a Cup is approximately half the price of a Shamal, so some might think it a bargain in comparison.
