The rise of the used car market

Nice respray and some interior trim and away you go, although I notice that the reserve still isn't met at £8K

The Wolf is quite different to a civilian Defender; 24v, the old 300tdi engine, different chassis, etc.

Friend has just bought a 90 Defender.
6 years old. 60K miles. Diesel tranny engine.
No options what so ever.
Ex farm vehicle, 60K hard, hard miles.
The rubber floor mats are worn through to the steel floor pan.
The back equally worn, from transporting sheep and wire fences.
Half a field still stuck to the chassis.
The steel wheels are rusty.
£20k.
New price in 2015 was £23k
Crazy.

I bought a low mileage one owner defender hicap from a farmer, I found out it's not a good thing when the low mileage is all off road pulling tree stumps out and the chassis has been buried in cow **** for most of its life , it rotted from the inside out , it was cheap, i'm talking 3k at 12 years old but Christ on a bike was it knackered

When you let the clutch out it was 2 seconds of taking up the slack before it moved, the steering was 1/2 a turn in either direction before the wheels moved, I picked it up the other side of cambridge, managed one junction of the M6 before I shat myself , raining with 1930s style wipers and lights , vibration and 3/4 turns of the wheel trying to keep it in a straight line when trucks came past me

threw money at it and got it almost OK , amazingly I didn't lose money on it

would not do it again

I guess really you can replace the rubber mats, the split worn seat coverings, get the back load bay resprayed, repaint the steel wheels, and no one will know it was a farm hack vehicle.
Then sell it for much more as an immaculate last of line Defender "look how original basic and well cared for it is“!!
I bought one of these from a show, it was cheaper than this but they're very good at quietening the inside of a defender

A friend of mine is currently having an old 110 Defender rebuilt, and he’s opted to have the engine and gearbox from a BMW M5 installed. I imagine the 500bhp will be adequate!

That'll be fun to corner I'm sure!

Prices of newish second hand can’t keep going up like they have been. Many are already close to the new price. True, you will be quoted 6-12 months to actually buy a new car, but who is going to pay more then new for used, for an everyday car?

Having said that, I suppose people locked into 3/4 year leases that are coming to an end are snookered. Having to take nearly new for xxx/month, so they dont see the list price versus used price anyway.

Neat trick the industry is pulling there!

i have just chopped a 3.5 year old X3 for a new one - I will wait 6-12 months but to cost to change was very acceptable! Will have to drive the Mas and our 12 yr old 520d for the next 6months!

He'll need to sort the suspension. Get rose joints on it and the thing will handle pretty well, too.

It's a full not-and-bolt rebuild, so everything will be upgraded. It's at the place which is currently working on my Series 3 90, so when I go next week I'll see what stage the monster is at.

A friend of mine is currently having a Tesla engine fitted by Twisted to his 110, the price is utterly insane IMO, especially considering the purchase price for the Defender from them a few years ago in the first place..

Twisted is literally round the corner from me. See their vehicles all time around Thirsk.

What’s he doing with his old engine? If it’s a TD5, I might be interested in it as an upgrade for my Landie.

It will be the last one, 2.2TDCi.

Sorry but I’m sure it’s been done by now and I wont be speaking to him until the end of February.

Also - I’m not sure how much you’d want a Diesel engine that’s spent it’s entire life in London traffic anyway to be fair.

I'm in discussions with a guy who has a South African built V8 110. They have next to no power but make a nice noise and manual too. Funnily enough I followed a 1987 M5 the other day and it looked wonderful but guess you are talking about the current engine with twice the power?

I used to have a v8 110, Bob. Torquey as ****, slow as a dead sloth, thirsty as Oliver Read and sounded great. Loved it. Un-bloody-stoppable. Must dig out some old photos of it in impossible places, one day.
