Classic, and clever. Fawlty Towers from same period was funny too but not clever and basically a shouting farce.

Notice Jerry's crossing of London Bridge consistently takes slightly longer per episode as the series goes on.

My Mrs (foreign) thinks it not funny (she generally loves UK comedy) because it's 'just a rich person lining next door to a poor person' - she totally misses the point...

We have been watching it lately as well. Bloody brilliant. When they got drunk and there was a hint of wife swapping....Very funny.

I don't think it was much of either, actually. There are plenty of episodes where Tom and Barbara are struggling. They get vandalised, their crops are ruined, they try to get a bank loan, they compete with Margo and Jerry and fall out with their neighbours. They get ****** and they all flirt horrifically with each others' partners.

Bloody brilliant though.
