My winter project

As this is supposed to be a car forum, I thought I would try to get it back on track a bit. I do as much maintenance to all my vehicles as I can myself. This is all part of the enjoyment of car ownership for me, not just a money saving exercise (though it helps). Last winter I did a complete brake overhaul, involving new discs, pads, flexible brake lines, hard brake lines, handbrake shoes and cables, and stripped and rebuilt the suspension so that there are no seized fixings, and also installed a new radiator as I found a drip from the old one when I removed the undertray.
This year, so far I have changed the gearbox oil, engine oil and filter, and a new Hill engineering 'H' gate on the reverse selector. Yesterday I removed the rear bumper, for several reasons, firstly the mesh centre section had come adrift in one corner, have now removed this completely and will re attach once all the tar spots have been cleaned, and everything given a good polish, 2nd reason is that the spare wheel heat shield was rattling around, because I discovered one of the fixing tabs has broken off, suggestions on how to repair this welcomed. The other reason is that when Emblem inspected the car, they said the F1 pump sounds laboured, so on reading various pieces on how the pump is usually ok,and it's the motor at fault, I have purchased direct from Italy a new motor, and am going to have a go at replacing it in situ, haven't really looked at it yet, but will update you as I progress.

Sounds like it’s going to be fun!

on the shield, I would try to find some thin alloy sheet, shape it with an overlap and rivet it to the original piece. It’s way too thin for welding or brazing.

Thanks Zep, good shout.

Well done Jaast on your annual projects.
I had my heat shield replaced with a wrecker's one due to it being damaged at its lowest point.
Had the job done while everything was out having a clutch change.
Interesting process to change a clutch, start my removing the boot linings........

Emblem stated my F1 pump was 'labouring' almost 7 years ago... Still working fine but I do have a new spare ready for when it goes.

Interesting, to be honest I wouldn't be able to say if it is or not, it works. The only way I would be able to tell a difference is if you put me in front of a perfect one and defective one at the same time, but you take your cars to the leading experts because they know what they are talking about, so as I've bought the motor I will replace it, if it's at all do-able, gives me something to do anyway.

One of the first problems I encountered in removing the rear bumper, was getting the rear undertray/splitter/ call it what you may, off. There are 5 bolts attaching it to the bumper that are fixed by captive fixings in the bumper. 1 snapped the bolt clean off, and the other 4 just unwound the fixings from the bumper! After soaking them for several days in WD40, and the application of gentle heat from my iroda gas powered soldering iron, i was able to seperate the two bits of these remaining 4 and so save the bolts. I then did a search for some suitable threaded hex drive fixings, and came up with some suitable looking ones on ebay, unfortunately they are made of cheese, and my attempt to wind them into hard fibre glass resulted in them self destructing, so I had to resort to drilling the hole oversize, and using two pack resin to hold them in.
Next was the loose centre section of stainless mesh, held in by rivets at the bottom, and plastic tabs at the top which are fixed by something like tiger seal, that will be easy enough to sort.
I have been pondering fitting rear parking sensors for a while, but didn't really want to drill the bumper, and then have to colour match the sensors, and I came across these https://www.proxel.com/en/models/rear-parking-sensor/electromagnetic-eps-dual-4-0.html so as the bumper is off, I have ordered some ans will see just how good they are.

Good work, working on them is part of the ownership ‘experience’ for me as well.
I managed to pick up a good used wheel well heat shield from Stu - trident spares for not a lot as mine was the same as yours, temporarily I did fit large plastic washers to support it correctly as it’s a pain to fit.
Also the F1 pump I replaced the complete unit opening the hydraulic circuit following a guide on here, no issues since.
I need to drop the rear subframe again for suspension bushes, small hydraulic leak from an ev pipe and clutch solenoid high leakage rate - Joy!

not entirely sure whether in this instance these would of helped but worth knowing that you can get rivnuts which are extremely useful in these type of situations, got me out of a few jams, you can buy the fixing tool separately or as a kit and various thread sizes are available

Great to read about someone tackling work like this which is so labour intensive but looks achievable for those willing to have a go - well done
Rusted nuts / bolts and fixings seem to be a feature of almost all the jobs I read about on here, something to expect from a 50years old classic, less so from a relatively modern car.

Given her last interview I think she had become a little more pragmatic with life and the environment... even saying she understands people taking flights.

Still a lot more maturity needed, but growing up.

Like the Spitting Image sketches of her... quite funny.

Not seen any of the new spitting image yet. Must get around to watching it for a laugh.
