10/10 for balls and reaction time! PS. I always carry a guardian angel in the car, "don't drive faster than your guardian angel can fly"

Please elaborate on your OBE sounds interesting - I saw a UFO once - yeah honest - broad daylight shaped like a giant metallic tic tac standing upright moving steadily on a windy day - no camera phones back then but it s forever etched in my mind
Well!! Previously I'd read Dr. Robert Monroe's books on OBE's and TBH found them a bit fanciful so I was aware, knew the 'process' and tried to force one on myself several times without success so filed it away in my mind under 'didn't work'.

Anyway, one night about 7 years ago now I was in bed alone, Mrs must have been away, and my second daughter had turned 18 and was going out, back late regularly so I was constantly watching for chinks of light in my not-quite-fully-closed bedroom door to look for a signal that she was back safe, ie the hallway light on (we lived in a bungalow).

No sign, then saw the light and thought, good, she's back. I relaxed and suddenly my upper torso and legs started rising off the bed, my **** stubbornly not moving tho and I literally cr4pped myself, I was truly scared despite wanting this to happen all those years ago. That fear seemed to pull me back and I relaxed again only for it to start again, panicked again and back to reality.

Looked at the expected chinks of light in the crack of the door and all dark. Got up and looked around, she wasn't back.

Dream? Imagination? Possible, but felt real enough to me and I've had many lucid dreams where I've known I was in a dream and could manipulate it, this felt more 'real'.

I go cold thinking abut it.....

I once was woken up by the buffeting of an articulated lorry hurtling past in the opposite lane. I was doing sixty ish in my own lane, in a Peugeot 205. I eased up on my working hours a bit after that.

During The Troubles, I went to a colleague's leaving 'do' in a hotel a couple of miles from the South Tyrone / Donegal border. In what, charmingly was called bandit country. The same as most others in my then line of work,
I was developing a real drinking problem. At age 22.
Despite being two, or more likely three times over the limit, I had the bright idea of running a delicious blue eyed blonde home to her village, several miles away, almost on the border. There was pretty thick winter fog which made reading any of the direction signs impossible. She navigated us back to her place and a couple of hours later, I departed for home. About forty miles away. As soon as I drove out of her driveway, I turned in the wrong direction and quickly got lost. A short time later, I rounded a bend too fast, hit black ice and slid sideways at speed through a border post manned by the Irish police. As I slid past their bunker, out of control, I saw two policemen running into the road trying to put on jackets, gun belts and carrying assault rifles. I braced myself for gunshots, but none came.
I ended up, about thirty yards into the Irish Republic, with my little MG Midget stuck in a hedge. If I'd have done that in a British Army checkpoint, I'd have ended up looking like a colander, because squaddies were usually on a hair trigger.
Once the two policemen realised that they were unlikely to be under attack by a drunken fool in a bright yellow Midget, they were very helpful in helping me get the car back on the road. Luckily it wasn't damaged, they gave me directions to get onto the A road that I needed and off I trundled, more slowly than before and promptly got lost again, almost immediately. More by luck than anything else, I found a signpost directing me to a road I was familiar with and I arrived home, incident free, an hour or so later. There's a lot to be said for being a lucky SoB.

When I was working for Spinvox in Marlow, I was riding 60 miles each way around the M25 and getting woken up several times a night. I used to regularly fall asleep on my Speed Triple....

Must have been bad, feeling yourself lowering down again onto that cr4p.

On the lighter side of crashes, my father was on the A3 in his Austin-Healey 3000 in the 1950s when someone came the other way in a Morgan F-Series three-wheeler. The Morgan drifted to the outside of the curve and then rolled into the ditch. My father stopped and ran over to help. The Morgan driver climbed out from under the car and shouted, furiously, "Dammit! Its always doing that!"

Formerly known as a Mercedes CLK 230 KOMPRESSOR SPORT. This one went in a ditch at high speed and somersaulted out again. Note how strong that cabin was not to crush.
I stupidly gave this car to my 21 year old Royal Marine nephew - figured he was working on escape and evasion and he lost it on a bend. Currently he drives a BMW M250i and he is waiting for his 120-in-a-30 zone verdict to come through. Future Darwin award winner I fear...

My near death experience is now officially booked in for the 9th Nov.

I’ll do my best to avoid “death” whilst endeavouring to establish whether there’s any substance behind the OBE phenomenon or indeed the issue of staying away from very bright lights.

Planning to report back a week or so later with my first hand findings.

It was the mid 80’s when I was studying illustration in Cornwall, a few of us decided to go to Helston for Floral Day (Which is an excuse for a 24 hour p!ss up). We were on the way back in the pitch black down country lanes (very similar to the final scene in the Italian Job only in an Austin and pitch black) when we skidded off the road. We couldn’t see a thing! We all got to the front of the car and eventually pushed it backwards onto the road, pulled out the wing which was now offending the tyre and drove back home.

My mate Paul who’s car it was, lost a hub cap, and decided to re-trace our steps back to where we had the ‘OFF’ to see if he could find it……..He did! Later he took us all back to the spot where the skid marks went off the road into the grass land. They travelled about 30 ft into the grass and stopped about 10 ft away from the edge of a cliff about 300ft down to the rocks and sea…………It was a very sobering eye opener!!

I made contact again with Paul about 6 years ago and asked him if he remembered that night that we were almost ‘Fish Food’! Below is the email conversation…

Hey Paul

Great to hear from you!

I stayed in illustration for about 5 years working for others but then sadly departed from it. I then became a hair stylist and did this for many years. Whilst doing this I did a degree in Building Surveying and graduated in 2003. I am now a Building Surveyor/Project Manager working for Chester University.

I met up with Scott Rayson 3 years ago at his wedding. The last time I saw Fraz was at our son's Christening 9 years ago and not heard from him ever since!!!?

I hate facebook but joined it to stay in contact with:-

Steve Tonkin
Pete Sergeant
Scott Rayson
Tracy Kitto
Andy Staples
Nick Mountain
Gary Pantling
Andy Atkins
Pat Starke

We went to St Ives 2 years ago and whilst we were there did a tour of all the old haunts! What great memories of the fantastic times we had.
Do you remember almost driving off a cliff in your white Austin 1100 (I think) in the pitch black all pi**ed up on the way back from Helston Floral Day?!!

Stay in contact and would be great to meet up with you again someday!

Stu

Hey Stu - Blimey you've had a go at a few things - I guess I did too in the early years when the kids came along - I think we were very lucky at ****'s Mouth - haha !! since college we've often been past there in the daytime though with the kids and they would hear how Dad skidded on the bend in the rain and the dark and nearly went over the edge. Remember how all that soil kept falling out from under the car at college afterwards - what a car lol! You've done well keeping in touch with all those guys, great memories...I think you did well to make the break from illustration, many of the artists we've got are finding it really hard at the moment and only the ones with a quick or cartoony style seem to be making a good go of things. Good to hear from you Stu - I agree it would be great to meet up anytime. Where are you living these days? Be sure to pass on my regards to anyone who remembers me :))

Best wishes

Paul

We went on a stag do to the Embassy Club early 80's Bernard was on, and place was rammed, so much so there were extra tables on the dance floor in front of the stage an we all sat there right in front of him. Ale was JW Lees, not very nice bit I was 18 and stupid and caught up in the stag thing so I downed a pint of this stuff in one.

One of the lads said 'I bet you can't do that again' I said easy and necked another. Then I realised I'd been kippered. I needed a piiss bad and Bernard was still on about 4 feet from me. Anyway, hung on until he took a break and would be back in in 15 mins, legged it to the gents only to find it crammed with blokes in the same boat as me hoping to have a piiss and get back to their seats before he was back in stage. I never made it, had me piiss and he was back on. Bear in mind I was shy and sensitive, 6'4" and 11 stone, lanky af. If he'd caught sight of me and commented on me I'd probably be dead now - suicide. Luckily he got the bloke behind me he was dead short and did some Japanese sniper stuff on him and I was pardoned. Made it to me seat unscathed. Sh4t myself though....

When I was 17 I had a Capri 2000GT- Thought I was the best driver in the world- Rolled it with three school mates in, we all walked away. It was repaired to live another day only for me to crash it again whilst at Sheffield Poly......To say my dad was unimpressed was a understatement...76413

Not myself, but a good mate of mine was in Tunisia a few years back, he went for a walk along the beach with his 5 year old daughter.
He just got back to his hotel room and then heard all of the gunfire from the terrorist attack. Looked out from his balcony and saw them running into the hotel grounds.
First thing he did was move the wardrobe infront of the door and closed the balcony door and curtains. They stayed in their room for something like 5-6 hours before the all clear was given.

Scary sh*t especially with 2 small children.

I forgot one!

Walking home from town (yes I'd had a couple but by no means drunk), got off the train at Ashtown, and walked home down the towpath of the Royal Canal (Dublin, remember) about 10:30pm, dicking about on my iPhone looking for music and was conscious of making sure I was walking on the path itself. Anyway, I wasn't, stepped onto the grass verge, and fell into the canal.

Went under, and grabbed the rushes which of course just uprooted. Memory lets me down here but I got out, iPhone intact and safe, and squelched my way home, sodden jeans, shoes ruined jacket ruined, bits of black 'stuff' in my hair.

I should mention I can't swim and have a fear of water.

The very spot (looking the other way)....
