Saw the space station up there the other night. I wouldn't be sat there....don't like heights which would be an issue.

T minus 5 minutes.
If it was me sat in there my nappy would be full!
Especially when you see what happened the day before.
Balls of steel - basic qualification for an Astronaut.

Am I missing something? Rocket, plane, train? Why would I go out of my way to watch it?

First launch with human cargo on top of a space X rocket to the International space station.
The Americans don't have to hitch a ride with the Russians anymore.

As a Yank the seemingly routine launch today inspired a greater emotional reaction than would normally have attended a launch event. Demonstrations of engineering excellence were once so routine that they were taken for granted.

Now, seeing such feats return to the stage, in the midst of all of the other messes in our nation (and the world? for that matter), it brings to mind 1968-69. Riots in the street, yet reaching for the stars. The full spectrum of humanity. Let’s hope we resolve the conflicts peacefully and find a way to all reach for the stars.

Wasn’t referring to your post but to the linked article “celebrating“ the failure of the tested prototype Mars rocket

I think you’re way off the mark. If anyone reads it they’ll no doubt form their own opinion.

I've heard that NASA are planning to start building a set in 2025 for the Mars landing 'before the end of this decade' ...

This kind of stuff blows my mind..probably a hidden ambition to have been one of those astronaut once upon a time!
About 20 years ago when at the Farnborough Airshow, I had lunch with Chuck Yeager ( first pilot to ever go faster than the speed of sound in level flight). A real pioneer...Now look what we're doing under the auspices of Elon Musk....just
incredible.
Maybe Elon can find a cure for Covid-19.

The recovery of the booster rockets, a falling cylinder to then land upright on an exact landing spot under control, is just incredible.
