What shape will the car industry be in after all this?

That may well happen in time but the aid package has at least postponed it for a bit:

The stock price means nothing at this stage... let’s see what consumers demand looks like when thing get back to normal (whenever that is).
A need and a want are very different thing! Cars won’t be high on the agenda for people that are scared of losing their jobs.

Let’s see what the earnings season looks like from next month onwards.

And a $157bn pile of debt can only look much bigger after this crisis is over !

Interesting thoughts and I'm happy for you guys that can WFH must make life a lot more pleasurable.

What will happen with all the former Company office blocks ?

The owners of which I believe are a lot of Pension funds.

Could Pensions be the next Crash.

I'm only a Car Mechanic and I'm finding the Manufacturer work is going to be dead for a long time.
The future for me will be Service and Repairs and that I think will be Busy looking after what we have.
Just my thoughts so don't Castrate me.
Most Pension funds were underfunded prior to 4 weeks ago....now totally fecked.
If you can, get the transfer value out and into your own name before they run out of cash.
It’s a run for the lifeboats once again, first out gets the cash transfer value!

Does your advice extend to my 25year final salary scheme !!!

Of course, massively underfunded!
Get a transfer value and get it into your own name pronto.
You only know what you know...........I have two schemes behind me, neither underfunded and both indexed linked- there is not a chance I will be cashing them in anytime, let alone anytime soon.

They won’t be funded after this!

It's only as good as its trustees, who are meant to ensure it can meet all current and future obligations to members. The employer would have to bail it out in the last resort.

Any scheme falling into deficit will have to rely on the company coming to the rescue if necessary. That is a cause for concern in these times.

What are this group's opinions on public perception of super/sports cars, now and in the future? Between the jolly green army and the threat of recession, I wonder how conspicuous consumption will be viewed.

I think Petrolhead like us and there are many around the World will still love them but sadly many probably will not and we will have to keep them safe.
They are History as much as anything else.

You're probably right, at least in part. Let's face it, our cars have always been niche anyway, so arguably it won't be that different. Easy access to finance has made them more accessible, and I strongly suspect that there will be some absurd deals to attract people back into Lambo, Fezza Porsche and so on when the dealerships open again. What will likely have changed is that people might be less minded to spunk their cash on a car when paying down the mortgage, clearing the credit cards, building up a war chest and all that dull stuff might just feel more important. It's as much a prediction of psychology as one of economics. Never dull, that's for sure!

Sadly (or not, depending on your point of view) the Green Army, Greta et al will be on the back foot for a while whilst they try and get economies up and running again after all this.
As I have found over the last 8 years, everyone want to reduce energy consumption and be a bit greener, but if it costs too much money there is little interest.
If money is in short supply it gets energy efficiency projects get canned.

All IMHO but Its likely that rescue mode only lasts a relatively short time. By 2022 massive structural changes will be happening in the world which will involving less globalisation and more internalisation. The Euro will likely contract to the core Northern European countries and carbon saving will get turbocharged permit the pun. Look at how broke the UK was after WWII but we still got the NHS and social security systems put in place very quickly.

As for exotic fast cars, much of the population will turn against then, partially because they could not afford them in first place - we already see lots more flashy lights when we safely overtake slower moving cars and I look for a dash cam (illegally) placed in the windscreen of cars I intend to overtake, people like to rat on others, witness the report yesterday of people calling the police when neighbours go out for two runs in a day. Wealth will be seen as a privilege not a right - we will need to be discrete revealing it and showing it. We will see retrospective taxes to get high CO2 cars off the road and newer versions on Ferrari’s etc will be limited to track use only. I can argue, logically rather than passionately against all this but that’s how I see it.

I wonder if you can get a mobile EMP device for the car for such an occurrence?

Really good points, Bob. I also do the same with dashcams. They're a menace!

I see us moving to a more Swedish approach to wealth. If you have it, you don't flaunt it. You eat in the same kind of places as other people, you pay your taxes in the same way as other people and you dress the same. No glitzy clothes, bling watches and stupidly fancy cars, and try to dodge your taxes you can expect to be told you're a pr!ck. Maybe you live in a nicer part of town, have a bigger summer house and boat, but wealth is subtle and you pay your dues.

And you know, I'm kind of fine with that. At a minimum, it may do little more than inform our choice of car colour. A neutral shade car will always be perceived more favourably (in general) than a bright yellow one.

Right, best trot off and get me some of that wealth so I can start living my Scandi dream. Sköl!

I'm not so fussed about what the future holds. I'd be more than happy just looking at some nice cars in a garage as a mini car museum collection.

I'm either ignorant or uneducated in most art so for me I'd much rather have a few k sitting in a garage rather than hung an o wall.

If I get to drive them a bit as well then all well and good.

Maybe in the rest of the UK but not in London. Remember this is all temporary and people (generally) have short memories

take heart exotic car lovers, people were saying the same things about cars/social “responsibility”/green movement in the early 90s and post early 90s recession and look where we got to: a golden age of cars
