Not sure if there is any love for 90s 5-Cylinder Audis on here?

Here is a picture I just found taken in around 1994 of five Audis we had in the family at the time. All purchased new or ex-demo. When new car models come out today there is often lot of grumbling and discussion around whether it is an improvement on its predecessor. It was no different then. The Crystal Silver B3 Coupe was kept by my uncle until he passed away as Audi could never convince him they had anything better to offer. It was sold a few years ago with only 27K miles on the clock. The B4 80 Saloon replaced a B3 90 2.2E saloon. We all much preferred the B3. The B3 90 2.3E in grey replaced a B3 90 2.3E in Maraschino Red, both great cars. The Panther Black B3 90 20V I personally drove 96K miles in and was quite simply a superb car in every respect. It was replaced in 1995 with an Audi A4 1.8T Sport which never hit the same spot. I missed my 5-Cylinder 20V. Still do. The B3 2.3E Coupe quattro in Pearlescent White was glorious to look at and listen to. It was replaced with a 2.6E V6 Cabriolet in Merlin Purple which again did not connect with the driver in quite the same way. Neither did an S4 V8 Cabriolet that followed (though a 3.0V6 was a lovely thing). However now driving a selection of B4 and B5 (and C4) Audis again as we prepare them for sale, it is clear that Audi were still at the top of their game then and certainly against most contemporaries. They were and are great cars which are getting harder to find. The grin factor is equally difficult to discover in more modern machinery (aside from, say, a Maserati or Aston Martin :)

Big fan of early Audis as the only dealership I passed on my way to school was Audi. The B1 Audi 80 & C1 100 were just so different to the regular British Fords, Vauxhall and Leyland stuff truly exotic. Mate then served his time there in the late 70s early 80s and B2 80 was a lovely car especially the Golf Gti engined 80 Sport. Never a fan of the C2 100 but the C3 when it came out blew my socks off especially the Avant just so different. Mate moved on to service admin and was then allowed to bring cars home so we "test drove" nearly everything including the Quattro but the only one I ever owned was a B3 90 Quattro which had a non-turbo 5 pot, I think it was the first saloon to use this engine, which was superb quick but not fast with handling that was of a different world.

After that I think Audi lost their way from a style perspective, the B3 Coupes just look clumsy to me and subsequent saloons, coupes or cabrios all followed suit. Audi seemed to be the first manufacturer to be chasing every niche using similar components which in my mind led them down the world of blandness, all car looked the same. However on the engine and driving front they were on point but I just couldn't get over the styling, same is true today in my view.

Today a 90 Quattro or a 80 Sport are high on my wishlist

and finally a V8 which was rare as hens teath.

All ex family Co directors cars.

So smooth to drive and cover epic distance in.70709862_2165074757124495_6317565269401141248_o-copy.jpg

Good luck finding a 90 quattro. I was so happy to find this which is now back on the road. One owner. 14K miles. Drives as new and yes they are as good as you remember....

Currently have 5 Audis

90 quattro, C4 A6, B5 A4, TT quattro Sport and A5 Cab

Worked out the other day they have a combined age of 93 years and a combined mileage of only 92K miles! I feel another group shot coming along.

I had a B2 80 Sport in white, one of the last 1986 ones. My second ever car, loved that thing. Very very rare to see one for sale now.

I agree with you about the 80 Sport.

I had one back in the day and sold it to a friend when it had 150K on the clock, and still going like a young one. He ran it into the ground and scrapped it when it hit a 1/4 million miles. The only work the engine had done was when I took the head off to replace two bent valves due to the timing belt breaking at 116K. The belt had been changed at 106K, but the dealer did not replace the tension pulley which eventually seized.

Who remembers procon-ten safety system with the steel cables.
Had a 80CD as a family car when the kids were little.
Lovely 5 pot motor and a beautiful interior.
Utterly reliable car and did some miles in that one.

Growing up my parents had a Audi 100 C2, 2.0, auto, in burgundy, with lots of chrome and a beige velour interior.

Loved that car....though it broke down a lot!

Wow that surprises me breaking down as back then against the competition Audi were pretty well bullet proof if serviced well.

You're right, that was the issue. Really poor servicing even from Main Dealers back then. My parents were also probably a little too trusting.

I don't expect it to be easy, same is true about an 80 Sport - In fact most of the cars on my wishlist would be hard to source but at the moment it is pure fantasy until that lottery win or some relation I don't know leaves me a small fortune but should dream

The Coupe was a car I almost bought 3 times (all 2.3's) but it never happened.
The first was sold just as I arrived to look at it.
The second I put a deposit on and then the bloke sold it to someone who turned up with all the cash there and then.
The third, whilst looking at it thinking it was the one I wanted, a bloke turned up (who had looked at it previously) and stumped up the full asking price.

I guess it was not meant to be.

had a couple of Audi 80 Sports in the day, really well built motors, been looking for a good example for the last several months for the stable, come across a few on fleabay but either been modified or in sh1t condition, quite fancy a Mercedes C36 again as well, nostalgia thing again, Audi Sport Quattro SWB, now there's an Audi I would love to own

My sister had the 80CD. Was the procon-ten where the steering collapsed into the dash on collision. She had a burgundy metallic one POV 275Y, if I remember correctly. I think it had procon-ten stickers on the window somewhere. I’m sure it had an arrow or something on the dash to change up gears. My father had the Audi 100 at the same time.

80 Sports are hard to find they seem to have become a hit with the modifiers so most have been destroyed.

C36 is a nice motor but I would prefer a C32 Estate like this C32 Estate, same mate who worked for Audi had one when he worked for Smart a real sleeper, now if only it had been a manual
