Is this 456 known to any forum members?

What would concern me is to buy a car that received £70k worth of work. I knew the 456 was a very temperamental (some of my friends who owned one long term would call that high maintenance) but £70k is a **** load, even for Ferrari.
I would be afraid of being a cursed car; why would the £70k spend to day stop all of a sudden under your ownership? Get ready for bad bills unless you’re happy to run it to the ground and sell it for parts around £25-30k in 10years time

Ask the guy on here who was the brave pill Pistonheader and bought a 120k miler or suchlike, he will also know them well. Voicey probably knows this car too or has seen it at auction.

Is that not what he did by starting this thread? ;)

To be fair when I bought my 98 456 with 24,000 miles it had history exceeding £25,000 so £70,000 sounds right for the mileage.
A thousand pounds per a thousand miles.

I can't watch the video but that first shot is the same car as in the OP! Same place, same colour, same yellow calipers/wing shields etc

Strange - the thumbnail image seems to have nothing to do with the car in the video (LHD, brown interior, auto, etc).

I've no idea how David pulled that off.

Great logic.
My logic has worked for me on a few of the exotic purchases really and the ones that made me money really especially when in NZ the Minis and the Daimler XJC off set any expenditure on the other cars.
Nice aye :)

Nothing to do with me yer honour!
I can only assume the video author used the images from the auction. I've watched a couple of them now and they're quite interesting but the all use one of the auction images for the frontispiece yet, as MM says, the car in it is quite different. Just photograph your own car surely?

Not sure if you mean me ? I was the “brave” PH’er who bought a 456 for £17k... which was by no means a minter, but having watched the video I would have run a mile from that one !! Mine had none of those issues and was a desirable RHD Manual. The auto boxes cost a fortune to fix. I must admit I would struggle to understand what £70k could have been spent on on “a normal car” in a short period of time. Mine had 53k miles on it when I bought it and 64k miles when I sold six years later and as many people have noted they are mechanically very reliable with a bullet proof engine and box (cambelts are easy to change too). Most gremlins tend to be electrical and hence although not cheap to fix, certainly not £70k worth so I’d suspect an abused example. Prices have definitely been softening on these for a while though, just check auction results over the past couple of years, very many don’t meet their reserve - even when they look reasonable. To be honest I think prices could continue to tumble and so I’d sit tight for a few more months and see what happens to the market. I’m no expert though... I was just lucky to buy an undersold car at the bottom of the market...

Mine had one invoice for £13,000 for a transmission renewal and the car was only on 25,000 miles when I sold it.

Well, I have the benefit of having seen the service history now, so I can see why it has not sold at the auction estimate;

* Formerly silver (argento) now resprayed black (this was done a long time ago - cannot see the invoice for this work, surprise surprise)

* Acceptable miles (53'ish) - however 90% of that was in the first 10 years and SORN since 2012 with limited miles

10K (klm) service - 11/95 - Mortimers
20K (klm) service - 09/96 - Mortimers
30K (klm) service - 10/97 - Mortimers
40K (klm) service - 06/99 - Mortimers
50K (klm) service - 07/01 - Mortimers
60K (klm) service - 08/03 - Etheridge
70K (klm) service - 12/04 - Etheridge
80K (klm) service - not performed (per 'the book' anyway), although well overdue on both mileage and time

* Can't see 70K of invoices, but certainly a lot spent in its first 5-6 years (over 40K by 2001!). Seems to have been a troubled car - frequent suspension work, repairs to shocks, repairs to wheels, frequent tyre changes, "repair to body damage" (but not a large bill for that line item)

* Recent MOT advisory for NSF and OSF floor pan slight corrosion

Condition aside - purely going by service history - this one is certainly one of the less spectacular you'll find. I would be surprised if it were to fetch 30K?!

Obviously not the one I am looking for....

Servicing of the rear shocks as self levelling if I remember is a regular repair item on a 456 lack of regular use probably the main cause.
