Ferrari - is it just me?

As has been discussed at length - sticking lots of money into a depreciating asset is not a smart move. It’s not about being able to afford it /APR rates etc - it’s just how much you lose on changing that’s important. Whether that lump comes out of the deposit or the whole cash purchase is immaterial. I love my cars but there comes a point when it’s just silly.
Ferrari is the only marque seems to hold its money (if you get the model/age right) . When the manufacturers can’t have confidence in the residuals- how can the customer. Residuals on Lamborghinis are horrendous. I have to say I was impressed with the Aston Residuals when I was looking at them for the first time.
Are Ferrari residuals really all that good if you drive them?
Most seem to have tiny mileages.

You raise a good point re: mileage preoccupation! I think all things being equal they fare significantly better residual wise than mclaren and Lamborghini. Not much else to compare them to. It is bizarre though as many others on here have raised.... their engineering should mean they go on forever... and yet at 30,000 miles people get scared. Regularly driven (not thrashed) regularly serviced cars are surely a better bet than garage queens.

Rubbish... If you had two identical cars side by side, one had 50k on the clock and the other had 20k. which one would you choose?

Talking of garage queens.. I'm still trying to keep my old 3200GT miles as low as possible, It wants for nothing and gets thrashed every time it goes out!

I was getting seriously anxious last week when the tripometer went over to 26K!:(

I am led to believe Ferrari mileage should always be taken with a grain of salt.
Given the fixation on low k's and the dollar value cost, helpful service centres will change the clock at each service to just above the last documented service.

20, 000 over 7 years or 1000 over the same timeperiod at £25,000 more would be a fairer comparison. Unique experience being told I am talking rubbish by a 3200 owner who is trying to keep his mileage down....

If only! Can’t imagine Dick Lovetts Clocking your ferrari. If it hasn’t been serviced at a main dealer within the 7 year free servicing plan I would be running the other way. Can’t imagine many people owning contemporary Ferrari’s in the U.K. would have them clocked considering the repercussions. Can’t speak for Ferrari’s owners outside the free servicing time frame in different countries.

You're right. Or you would be if they were truly identical. Which they never will be, if you get my point.

when I was a kid in the 70's, cars 3 to 5 years old and about 60k miles were knackered mechanically and the bodywork was full of either rust bubbles or filler. You often had to change gear in a certain sequence to get the synchromesh to work and getting reverse was a real challenge.

40 years later, whilst the rust prevention and mechanical robustness are immeasurably better (ever see a rusty bodywork these days?) we have stayed with the same mentality with mileage if not age with prestige cars.

I'm as guilty as the rest. I bought my 2010 GC at the beginning of the year and discounted anything with more than 35k miles.

My Aston Vanquish is a Concours winning Carcooned garage queen where I've put 4K miles on it in 8 years, but it gets a MD service and stamp in the book annually. Mad, I know!

I tell myself it's all to do with residuals, but I'm not sure the maths work if I ever come to sell it.

With classic cars overhaul condition tends to take over.
I'm guessing a late 70s Ferrari restored people wouldn't worry so much if it had done 80k miles?

Fear not, mileage doesn't put me off.

By the way, has anyone noticed the similarities between the design of the F599 and the Granturismo? Same designer!

And I thought I was the only one!

4k in 8 years, now that's dedication:cool:

Have the same with my Mercedes 500SL. Annual service for hardly any miles...totally uneconomic.

Met up with a friend the other day. He came over in his Mclaren 720 LT.
Front wings around the arches were rusty/bubbling. Ali wings so I guess oxidisation.
Apparently it is a common problem on those. Will be fixed under the 10 year warranty but not good on a car that was not far short of 300K.

My Vantage does the same, Phil. Common problem with them, too. It’ll be in for a door respray soon. It’s only just visible, but won’t fix itself.

I would have a stroke if i saw that on mine. Can’t beleive they can allow that to happen in such a new car
