Ok, I have a diesel Range Rover Evoque as a daily.

About 2 weeks ago, the red warning message showed up - indicating that the Diesel Exhaust filter was full and I had to visit dealer. It was strange this time as I did not even get the amber warning asking me to drive between 40-70 miles for 20 minutes.

Long story short - took it into dealer and was glad that I still had 2 months worth of warranty left. I finally got th response from the dealer - that the defect will not be covered under warranty. Apparently Land Rover has claimed that it is an issue with my driving style, I do not drive it fast enough or far enough !

Ok, I am not doing the biggest mileage, as I leave in Teddington Greater London. My wife uses the car during the week for the normal kids drop off and pick up, supermarket visits ...etc. However, I regularly drive to Bracknell and Reading for my son’s football fixture via M3, then to West Acton every Saturday afternoon during school term. So, if JLR cannot manufacture cars to be used in London this way, should they really be selling cars in London or any major city? I may think about disputing my next speeding ticket, claiming the car manufacturer had advised me to drive at 40 MPH or faster in order to clear up the diesel particles !

I guess many businesses are under a lot of cost pressure and are coming up with ideas to cut cost. JLR unfortunately had invested a lot on Diesel engine and the sale has fallen off a cliff here in UK and abroad. Interesting how they must have decided to cut the cost of warranty claim by blaming the drivers.

Someone took the finance company and JLR to court via the financial ombudsman services - because of the same DPF issue. In that case, th owner started to have DPF issue after just 3 or 4 week, JLR fixed it 3 or 4 times, but DPF issue kept happening. It then refused to honour the warranty claim when the owner brought the car back for repair! I can only imagine how the owner must be feeling, bought a new car but could not be driven and the car was parked on the drive way for over 6 months while they wait for a decision from the Ombudsman. Decision at the end - Finance company to cancel the contract immediately, refund all finance payments received + 8% interest. JLR ordered to take back the lemon it sold immediately, and JLR and finance company had to cover all insurance cost + 8% interest as well as the vehicle road tax (yeah and 8%), and £500 for the stress and inconvenience caused (a bit low in my opinion).

So, not only JLR probably lost a potential loyal customer, it probably has cost the company twice as much to sort out this dispute.

I have had other diesel cars in the past and never had this issue, and have never had a dealship blaming me for either a defective DPF or the system monitoring the DPF.

Not sure if any of you have had this issue before? This may be a design flaw and JLR is trying to bully its way to avoid covering the repair costs. Interesting how it never mentioned this limitation on the cars it is selling.

Another thing I found a bit hard to believe - had the car service around 12 months ago in Wimbledon service centre but somehow the service light came on again 3 weeks ago... I drove the car to a different service centre at Thames Ditton for DPF issue. The dealer told me that the service light needs to be reset because it should not come on.... BUT, it cannot do it and I have to take it back to Wimbledon dealer to have it reset.

It is depressing to see a true British car manufacturer (although owned by Indian) being run like this, such a joke!

So, looks like this is the end of my journey for anything JLR! Who knows what other excuses they could come up with.

Well, it looks like that I have to cover the DPF cost myself first, but I will enjoy the journey of filing this legal claim against JLR, and probably write a polite email to the joker trying to save company money by declining warranty claims.

Apologies for the rant, but am I over reacting?

I do feel for you. So infuriating !!!

My wife’s Touareg is getting to 5years old, and the free service plan expires next year. We were considering changing it to a JLR vehicle Velar or Evoque or even may be F pace. So many of our friends had issues w JLR reliability and as much trouble w the customer service.
Your post just put the last nail their coffin. Will stick to a German SUV.

I was aware of this issue when I bought my Jag a few years ago.
The jaguar forum was full of comments from unhappy individuals that had suffered the same fate as you......
I used to have to take the car out once a week for a blast to ensure mine did not suffer the same.
Apparantly the car/system just does not do frequent, town driving short trips very well and clogs up!!!!

How bizarre, my wife’s disco sport is currently in again for the same issue (third time back now as it’s rear parking sensor also cropped up for which they are replacing the lighting cluster and part loom) the light came on as Amber I think, cleared when it first went back then came on about 30miles later. Apparently ready for collection today.
I can find out where it’s being done if you think it’s worth seeing if they would sort and cover under warranty (colechester I think)

Shocking. Who would have thought a manufacturer would try to get out of not paying a warranty due to your use of the car. That would never happen with M.... oh yes, it would. I'll get my coat.

On a more serious note, if the warranty is underwritten by an insurance company rather than JLR itself I'd contact the Ombudsman about it. Make sure you get everything in writing as well, the notification from JLR to the dealer so that its JLRs choice rather than the dealer.

Well if thats the case then the car was mis sold to you. Do JLR specifically ask people who buy their diesels their exact driving patterns?? They need to have a clear definition of what they consider a suitable driving style to be. They dont, wont and couldnt. Therefore they cant deny the repair under warranty.

Think it’s just a “trait” of the car.
Bit like you can’t leave many Maseratis undriven for a couple of weeks cos the battery will drain...........and then you’ll be stuffed until you recharge.
That’s dreadful from a modern car too.

My Evoque has been spot on in 18 months and not missed a beat. I’ve got the later ingenium engine, are these issues with the previous engine as I did hear it was rubbish. The Ingenium came in 2016 I think.

Going Velar next time when my current lease is up

Assemble some evidence that you haven’t just been using the car to go the 1 mile to school everyday and go back to them. Don’t be rude to the dealer it’s Land Rover your fighting.

The biggest sticking point I can see is what have you been doing with it in the 2 weeks since the light came on?

Our Evoque, which we bought new just over three years ago, has been great and is now at 39k miles. Anything that has cropped up has been covered by the service plan and warranty, so other than new tyres, it’s cost us nothing in that regard.

The warranty claim you mention sounds remarkably similar to that of my business partner and his Ferrari. It was only by using the Financial Ombudsman that he got the car taken back, his money returned, plus costs and interest.

I had the same issue with my Merc E350D last year. However the car had done 90,000 miles.
£159 later it was fixed.

It's just as well my Jag XF gets a through thrashing most of the time I'm in it then to avoid these issues!

This has been a problem since at least 2006 with most dpf equipped cars not just JLR , Nissan, VW, mini ,Mercedes and that's just people that I know , all have had dpf issues because they only drive 4 miles to work and back

When I bought a car with a dpf I knew driving it 40 miles on the motorway 2x a week would keep it clear and it has , no issues in 3 years.

People buy them because cheap tax and 60mpg, the irony is that 60mpg is at 60mph on the motorway , round town a diesel is probably the same to run as a petrol with the same BHP when you factor in 10ppl more for the fuel

Bottom line, should've gone for a petrol car

A diesel engine is inherently more polluting than a petrol engine due to the nature of diesel and the combustion method which leaves more **** in the exhaust gases. There have been numerous attempts to make them cleaner but most of these entail filtering the **** before it enters the air. These filters no matter how clever get blocked over time and become less efficient.

One of the many reasons that I call the stuff Satan's fuel and given a choice would prefer to avoid it completely.

And as far as warranty companies go, don't get me started

The DPF issue is common to a lot of cars, and generally where they have been retrofitted to older platforms. The filters are too small and don’t get hot enough to burn off the particulates as intended in the drive cycle and the injector technology or mapping is less suitable and produces more soot. Once they reach a critical point after a lot of city driving they cannot be unblocked by the usual regen cycle. At this point exhaust back pressure increases, pushes contaminants past the piston rings and contaminates the oil.

The DPFs sold by the likes of Euro Car Parts appear to be OEM parts that have been cleaned out using a special process. There is probably a place that can do this near you, I was quoted £300 to have an Audi one removed and cleaned.

Not that you should have to do this, there might well be other issues that are increasing soot production that have contributed to this particularly as you went from fine to clogged without the regen light asking for a long run.

My Uncle recently returned his Porsche Macan for the same reason. 3 or 4 times back at service in a year and he got fed up, called his lawyer and got them to take it back and put him at the top of the list for a new petrol one. He settled for depreciation of £1 per mile so only lost £6k or so in 18 months ownership which is Ok against new car depreciation. He likes the new one better, it's the facelift with the nicer rear lights.

Our Volvo did this also a couple of times but it was sorted without issue. Volvo replaced the part itself with a new design and that fixed it permanently.

I've had 5 new Discovery's since 1993 - first 3 V8's. 16 mpg! 2 Diesels since 2014. All the cars have been brilliant. The dealers are complete and utter wastes of space. They constantly try their best to annoy and irritate their customers. They make no effort to acknowledge the fact that customers are shelling out £50k+ for their cars. You're treated like you bought a £200 wreck who's looking for a gold plated warranty. - Rant over, ahh that feels better.
