Quick question on Granturismo exhaust differences

Hi there - am nearly ready to finally leave my Porsche past behind and join in the world of Maserati. I'll be getting a 4.7 around 09/10/11 age and can't wait tbh. I've been looking all over this excellent forum to see what the differences are between S auto and S MC shift exhausts and noise levels. I don't want to be unduly loud in my very quiet neighbourhood if possible so I was wondering if anyone could help in terms of comparative behaviour on start up, when the valves operate and just general noise levels when warm.

Many thanks in advance - and hoping to be able to contribute rather than consume from this forum soon !!

The GTS is quite fruity in standard form so you might want to wait before going down the exhaust route.

But if (when) you do, I can confirm that from the centre section back the auto and MC versions are the same, so unless you decide you really don’t like your neighbours by going for sport cats the choices are the same.

The exhaust systems are the same but they operate differently between the models. Mine is an '09 Auto and the valves open up over 3k rpm when in sport mode (closed all the time out of sport mode). The MCs have the exhaust valves open all the time in sport mode, not just after 3k rpm, and again, closed all the time out of sport mode. I believe the MC Auto model variant might operate the same as the MC shift, I'm not totally sure. Its one of the reasons I went with an Auto because I knew I'd be driving in sport mode all the time (better handling/throttle response) but didn't want the open valves all the time.

I have an X pipe on my car and if I come home late at night I just switch the exhaust to STD and it's quiet enough to not upset anyone.

Thanks all very much for the speedy and really useful replies. Am I right in saying that both are as quiet (or loud I guess !!) as each other in valves closed mode then? Hmmm pendulum swings back towards mc-shift......

They are open all of the time in Sport on an MC Shift.
The tail pipes differ from Auto(twin outlet) either side to MC Shift(Single Oval) either side.

+ I'm 99.9% sure on my Auto with MC shift software opens all the time, the second I hit the sport button the exhaust gets louder.

I, like you am looking to join the Maserati gang :) I have recently test driven a 2010 MC Shift and a 2014 MC auto shift (no 3k rpm threshold). I found the MC auto a much smoother experience. I am after something to waft round in, not drive like a manual. Low speed work is much better experience in my opinion on the MC auto. Whichever way you go.......the noise....oh the noise. It is intoxicating.

Same - on an Auto with the MC auto shift software, the Sport button opens the valves immediately. You also get the same oval tips as the MC Shift. As such, I don’t believe there is any noticeable difference in volume or sound if being driven in manual mode...

And do the valves tend to open for long on cold start up? Can’t believe I’m being this considerate.........

They are open for a few secs whilst the vacuum builds. Thats providing the valves are functioning correctly and not stuck open or closed, which is a possibility with the age of GT you're looking at.

If I'm getting up early or going early to a car show I go round and appologies the day before as it would p1ss me off if some idiot was revving his car at 06.00 on a Sunday morning, a lot of people don't understand there is no way of stopping it when you start up. It only lasts a second or two but it is quite loud.

Discussed it with my neighbours before I had the exhausts modded. They like it louder than I do, but I tend to leave a out 0530 and my car is right outside their young girl's bedroom, so some consideration is good

As an aside the thing that made me ask is that 2 of my neighbours have BMs - an M2 and an M4. The M2 (which is a bit nearer) is quite loud when it starts cold but it's a nice noise and it quietens down quite quickly - the M4 sounds flat loud and blary and seems to stay loud for ages.

My 2016 GTS is an Auto and it has the single oval pipes each side.

I disconnect the vacuum hose on each muffler and the valve stays open all the time :D

Hey a quick question for you GTS owners. My exhaust valves are open all the time because I have disconnected the vaccum hoses.

However I note that it is always much louder when I cold start. I want it like that all the time as it sounds epic. But after 30 seconds or so it reverts back to the normal 'open' valve sound.

My valves do work as I reconnected the vacuum hoses to check and its quiet with them closed, louder when open, and louder still when cold.

Any thoughts as to how to get the louder sound?

Yes the later cars went to single outlet on auto, pre facelift cars had quad pipes.
