Was not expecting to see so many responses for a simple link of a cheap 4.2

Everyone loves a bargain I guess, but when the seller’s pocket is limited to look after the car, he is probably forced to sell at significantly reduced price because he is too scared to find out the real cost to sort out the car.

Sometimes we could be lucky buying from a seller who does not care about the extra 4 or 5k and sell at the PX price... this obviously is not the case. I wonder how much he was offered by a dealer or WBAC?

Maybe that's all there worth nowadays... all old performance cars cost lots of money to keep them in fine fettle
Maybe the time comes when you just have to cut and run!

Same thing...but as always, prices may have dropped..
Prices seeemed to have bombed since I bought mine. IfI had waited, I might have saved @ £4-5K I reckon...

I think prices have picked up a little... There are still some very cheap examples but there are now a few 4200s on AT that are close to GS money. I think much like Spyders once the sub 12k tired/neglected cars are either broken or taken on as long term ownership projects prices will be a little stronger... Although I'm not out to sell mine so it does not matter

I can see more going this way as they become cheaper to buy, we see many unloved 3200s, and 4200s, these will be no different. Bought by people who do not foresee potential expenditure and run on a shoestring. We, as enthusiasts, have a different mind set.

I'm not even sure that's true. Mine is about to clock over 100k. It's been well looked after. Is it really going to be worth 20k when I try and sell it next year with 110+ on it? Worth? Maybe. Will anyone pay that? I rather doubt it.

That was my point, someone may buy it if cheap and probably not be able to run it properly, then values will spiral more as you will get more dogs out there.

I don’t think they’ve done too badly. Looking on Autotrader the 07/08 4.2 seem to be £22k to £28k. That’s roughly the same price as an equivalent age 911, SL55, XKR and M6.

Yes indeed when compared to other similar marques they have decent residuals. People comparing them to F cars and Lambo's will naturally be disappointed.

I find this mileage thing a bit strange.
A Triumph Stag for sale with 70000 miles is sold as a low mileage car, oils and car reliability have come on leaps and bounds since the 70s but a modern Maserati with similar mileage is seen as coming to the end of it's life. A modern BMW or Porsche are not affected by this mileage madness that blights Maseratis values.

As ever, condition, history and mileage are everything. A low mileage immaculate GT will command high twenties, a high mileage dog will be low teens.

Having just bought back into the world of Porsche 944 ownership, I see a lovely blue 944 turbo with 25k miles and only 2 owners just sold for £47k. But a similarly lovely turbo with 100k miles is around £25k, and a scruffy one with high miles and missing history is around £10k. Same car, just different values, and understandably so. The Maser GT is no different.

As Ewan says mileage is just one of many factors to consider when buying cars, I always take it in the round with everything else, condition, maintenance history etc. etc. There is no such thing as a cheap Sportscar especially when you're in the Maser, Porsche, Ferrari band etc. as the cars were expensive when new and parts still are. Even low rent rep mobiles can rack up big bills due to the complexity of the parts ECUs for Fords and Vauxhalls are all similar to our parts.

As with all these things you look make a decision and take a punt. I know nothing about this car but it has warning bells ringing and as a buyer you need to be aware of those warnings.

But it’s probably been rebuilt 3 times and as it’s a Stag it’s probably had 2 engines and lost a couple of toupees ;)

I’ve had my Mini 20 years, I’ve rebuilt it twice and it had a bodge rebuild before I bought it.

I know what you mean with the 'Trigger's broom' bit but a Maserati looked after with regular oil changes and kept in a tidy state 80000 miles shouldn't be too alarming for a would be buyer.

The couple of 4.2 I’ve had a nosey at both have 60k something on. Doesn’t bother me.

Possibly- I certainly accept that its not a very substantial sample to base observations, and claim them robust...way easily skewed by a few dogs popping up and bingo- it looks like the bottom just fell out !

No- it shouldnt necessarily IMO either..As you have noted, you need to be circumspect to dodge the basket cases...!!

Its like you guys werent here a couple pages back...
Maserati get branded this way because they dont give a f00k. Once they're sold. they are potential return for servicing dealerships who over charge based on the name... (arguably, contentiously, whatever. I feel vindicated when I read so many people saying MD dont mean sh1t. They skip jobs like brake/clutch flush yada yada...!??!)Ten years later, you cant source basics parts for a car in some cases...(eg QP5-PAS exchanger. OBSOLETE N/A. Why does it matter ? Because they keep leaking as they were placed in a vulnerable place )

Im a newbie to all this but I am inclined to echo what many of you alreaady know. When buying a Maserati, the forum is a great place to start..because these cars need champions. And that means enthusiast cherished...because Maserati still dont give a f00k...!:new::)
