Having spent the last couple of days stripping and reassembling my fathers Audi A4 2.0 TDI due to it having a complete failure of the oil pump drive, I can safely say they are designed by sadists and can only be worked on by people who can share gloves with Donald Trump.

Oh and a word of warning, pretty much all 2.0 TDI VW and Audi’s share this oil pump hex drive made of cheese. If you have one get it changed before it goes, it will save you a turbo and vac pump plus a much bigger bill.

Jarmin cars are brilliant but an absolute Barbary b4stard to work on. However, that won’t stop me getting another one.

What sort of mileage had the car done when this went? I have a Yeti with the same 2.0 TDI engine (I think) and i am wondering when to worry about it! ??

This is a very common problem, have read lots about it on VW forums, from memory the earlier cars had a 77mm oil pump drive ,which is like cheese, later upgraded to 100mm, believe there are kits available to upgrade, check out VW/Audi forums and you will be able to find out which cars are likely to be affected.

It was at 99k, but I have since read that it can happen earlier. The chap at KMB parts is very helpful and has a nice fix. At least on a transverse engine you won’t have to drop the subframe to get the sump off!

I’ve read a lot now! Even the 100mm versions can be cheese so I understand.

To be fair if the water pump starts leaking the oil pump shaft won't last five minutes on the dry dumped engines as happened on my last 4200 with coolant and that's a fairly major repair to do on your back.

Also a fair point, but it is fairly rare, unlike the Audi where one chap I spoke to has modified over 4000 oil pumps.

It’s way more than that, they are burying their heads on the whole thing!

Same as they have regarding the timing chain tensioner failure on the petrol engines, which can happen at low mileage.
This is the company who designed the emissions cheat so what else would one expect.

If they had spent a little bit less time on cheating emissions and a little more time on the balancer shaft / oil pump I think a lot of people would be happier :p
