Could be a bargain but I am very cautious about buying a car like the 3200 from auction as I know a guy who bought one with end float 2 years ago :(

It's an automatic, so unlikely to suffer that particular ailment. Other problems are available...

buying at an auction, interesting, without an inspection or a test drive, mmm... could be a minefield. If it was in pristine condition why would you auction it? maybe a bargain, but at 8-10 its not that big a bargain.

went down to that auction last year brother in law always wanted a 2 door rolls ended up buying it, they let him start it up check fluids even move it back and forth, we drove it over 200 mile home no bother apart from the 13mpg he was lucky many a sad tale to tell no doubt, might be a absolute bargain but! dave

It is a bizarre concept the auction nowadays. It is hard enough to buy a complex modern car privately or from a dealer without any issues with or without an inspection. Including a test drive.

Here's a concept...go to look at buying a car that you can't drive, inspect or test and pay over the top for the privilege.

Many buy from auction and pay too much. You can often buy cars at the same prices or less through conventional channels with the benefits an auction cannot offer. I spoke to my brother a while back about auctions. He and his contacts have not bought a car from conventional auctions for maybe 10 years. They just are too risky for too much money and not cheap enough to warrant the risk IMHO. You might get lucky but it is so easy to mask or hide issues you could catch a very very big cold.

There lots of bargains and money to be made at car auctions, especially if your technically minded, have a few quid to spare and have the balls..

Sold as seen, If you know a particular marque well and have done your homework your quid's in!

Bought my first Ferrari that way and drove it all the way back from Great Yarmouth to Somerset on a Bank holiday weekend 275 miles perfect guzzled some fuel but we were smitten.

Me too Phil, I've bought some jems sold as seen, a few snotters too though.. The best was a nice 73 Fiat V6 Dino Spider that had run its bearings for 5K

I won't tell what I sold it for ;)

Nice one Dave.
My 4200 was a bargain like that.
A total unknown quantity that I repaired 3 years ago this coming August and still going strong.

I have been to a few "classic car" auctions. If there are a few people interested in a car it will generally go for more than via the classifieds. I've seen dealers, sometimes respected specialists, get more for their cars at auction than they were previously advertising them for in their showroom (with warranty etc.).

Auctions are all about knowledge and price, if you have one and the other is low there is money to be had but very much a case of buyer beware

Still Good Fun though.
Earned a few quid back in the early 80's buy at auction and pop it in the local evening paper out the door in a week.
Internet has now made everything available to all.
