I'm a metalhead, but not sure I'd boast about listening to Manowar!
I assume you're playing it on 10, like a real man...

At what point does one become an Audiophile?
I have a Rotel amp, Sony CD player and B&W speakers for my home setup and in the Maserati is a ZENEC naviceiver, with Infinity speaker upgrades.
It all sounds pretty good and passes my test of not distorting before my ears hurt.

I studied acoustics at university where we got to play around with Quad electrostatic speakers and the like. Most important thing we learnt was around sound perception & studies involving cheap / expensive gear behind a curtain. A bit like blind wine tasting. Very few can discern good from bad audio gear.

I still listen to music via a vinyl spinning on a turntable connected to a Quad amp and some Mission floorstanding speakers, I also have Sonos throughout the house which is gathering dust.

Of course 10...my neighbour knows it :) Actually i love classic rock, but when i need to wake up and regain my self confidence, some Monowar, Maiden, Metallica, Priest or Saxon are must...

I think in this thread i will learn of marques i have never heard before. Keep on making the information flow mates.

Linn from top to bottom. Apart from a Michell deck (but still with a Linn arm). And Sonos (obviously).

It must be maybe a decade ago now, but I once drove to John Michells engineering unit in North London to meet him and discuss a turntable. What a nice chap. I keep meaning to buy one of the limited edition black Gyro decks they made when he died, but somehow keep never getting around to it.

Some lovely kit being thrown around. Particularly Almichies. Sounds fascintating :)

I used to house share with an audio nut that introduced me to a lot of kit that was way out of my reach. So I thought about how I could, and I came up with the idea that if I built it then I might be able to.
It started with a simple intergrated IC chip amplifier design, and eventually ended up with that list! The pre and power amps are completely home built. The pre amp was actually based on a Pink Fish design; The PCB had to be etched and conponents sourced. It really is an excellent but of kit that I've looked at replacing, but I've not found anything that comes close to the level of detail or depth of sound stage.

The latest upgrade, which a friend introduced me to, is HD Audio. Its like taking a record and polishing it. The level of detail is astonishing. It's all PC server based, streamed to a suitable device, I've used an old squeezebox. Worth a look IMO

Mate just upgraded his Naim kit with Avondale stuff, we were both amazed at the improvement

Got my self a project carbon turntable beginning of the year looking to build on to it but work on the house taken over. So play through an old wharfdale amp and speakers that are 20 years old. But still have a nice rich sound to them. When I get home unwind and play some Led Zeppelin or other classic Rock.

Technics SL7 Linear tracking turntable from new!
Squeeze box (fantastic piece of kit) with Inguz eq
Audiolab 8000A
TDL Studio 0.5s with uprated metal cones (I think this makes it a Studio 0.75)

Every so often I get interested in DSP room/speaker correction and then re-read all the stuff, which then reminds me that it's complicated!
