Just wondering when all suppliers run out of these expensive, easily worn suspension arms, what can be done to keep the car on the road?
Is it really no way to fix the play in these ball joints?

Know what you mean. ..but prices are all over the place.

Rear bottow wishbones for a 4200 with xenon (2003) are £450, yet the same part for a GS is £1250...go figure!

Surely they are the same arms Peter ?
Would love to know what's different.
Change both arms to 4200 ones.

Hi Timkee

Just to let you know myself, and a fellow member on here, have been working over the last 9 Months to do exactly that, to come up with a 3200 / 4200 / Gransport front lower control arm whereby the ball joint can be replaced, and not become a throw away expensive item.

To give you the basics, we are using the existing control arm, out with the existing ball joint, drilled, threaded, ball joint re-inserted with new surrounds, grease, springs etc, which then makes the lower control arm ball joint a totally serviceable item for the future, so if the ball joint needs replacing it can be simply unscrewed, insert our new ball joint kit, and away you go. Sounds simple but assure you that has not been the case in design.

Please see pictures below.

We have had a pair of these front lower control arms on a 3200 currently on a car which has covered 10k miles at the moment, without any problems, and we will be soon taking them off, and complete a full analysis of the ball joint as regards wear etc. In hindsight we probably should of done a 4200 pair first and given them to Benny or Mark, probably would have had all the results we needed in 2k miles and 2 days ha ha

Anyway we are progressing, also if anyone has any old 3200 / 4200 front control arms with just the ball joint shot, we need some more for testing.

Another great initiative, well done Greg, hoping the testing goes well and another list can be started in the not too distant future to meet the needs of the forum

That looks great, Greg. Happy to offer my GS as a guinea pig for R&D.

Many thanks Mark, as soon as we get a pair of 4200 front lower control arms to refurb, I will be directly back to you, also well done you on your excellent offer on the discs, just fantastic work

Great initiative, looks perfect.
Can you tell some more about how it is done?

Good Morning Boomerang

Closely guarded secret, I would have to shoot you if I told you....Joking aside, I would rather not go into too much detail at the moment, this has taken an immense amount of effort and time to get to this stage, and we would not want anyone else copying the idea for obvious reasons

Sorry...if you needed additional arms to develop and/or sell on.

Hi Peter, Now I am with you, most of the front lower control arms that are advertised on Ebay are, or should I say, should be in good order, so purchasing them, then having them refurbed, would result in the final price being far too high , hence we are looking for control arms that have failed, because of the ball joint, to make the final cost sensible. Thanks for the suggestion though.

This is great Greg! Do you think the rim where the ball joint thread in is strong enough to take the load? The lower control arm on the rear has different geometry, if the same position is drilled through it will leave only little metal connected to the main body. Any work around?
