Im not saying being a Policeman isnt a difficult job, what im saying is its not fit for purpose and cost effective in this day and age. If the force got paid by results then going by the stats they would receive very little. No chance, more tax on fuel? Ridiculous idea. Insurance/tax/MOT dodgers would just fiddle the electric meter and use EVs.
More Police means more personnel. More funding, means raising the council tax which you wouldn't want to pay. The police force have to compete with other industries for workers, and thanks to a few rogue cops it's getting harder to recruit. Therefore they have work smarter with resources to hand.
Compared to 50 years ago when the population was around 50 million and I was your typical oik teenager it appeared ( and im doing my best not to wear rose tinted glasses here ) there seemed to be more bobbies on the street regularly patrolling in Panda cars , more bobbies patrolling the town centres on foot , no Helicopters , no major forensic labs, no CCTV , No Apnr camera's, No Body cams, no pepper spray No tasers ......... I think our local bobby Tony Gilkes who rode a Velocette water cooled was smitten when he actually had it fitted with a telephone of sorts. Crimes seemed to get solved in those days , people had visits from the police when stuff was stolen from sheds and back gardens or shops that were broken into or banks were robbed . All by traditional policing and local knowledge of the beat cop who would know the oiks . The average Joe in the street felt a lot safer generally and most had an admiration for the force.
I think most would agree that now with all the resources they have ( and yes we know the population has increased by 15 million ) the budget for the police force is mega and completely out of proportion for the amount of crimes solved , most people feel unsafe around most town centres at night or in the early hours or when around teenager youths that congregate in parks and car parks etc.
Its not a police force now as such now as we once knew it and relied upon , police are not staying in the force as a career anywhere near the length time they used to , one of my life long friend a sergeant in traffic in west sussex constabulary did his 25 or 30 years and was out by 2015 saying he is actually ashamed a little at how the force has developed and says its not fit for purpose.
So with all these new mega police stations , Hi tech state of the art comms and computer systems/data bases ,armed police training academy's Maintenance depots for the vast number of high end cars they swan around in , where is the improvement for joe public in response times , where is the upside for joe publics taxes , where is the upside for crimes to be resolved .....from my perspective it isnt justified , seems the police are there now to protect the powers that be and the corporations ( the few) not the masses.
So yes im a great advocate for pay as you go on fuel , pile on the tax to cover insurance and road tax problem solved , and same for policing ..........let them earn next years budget by solving crimes , not using joe public as a cash cow .....................And Im not Anti police ............they have just been lead down the corporate protection path .
