Can't be any less fragile than my Metro Turbo. Had it 18 months and 4 new goldseal gearboxes with 2 new goldseal engines. All under Rover warranty as well. The last couple of claims were refused but my dad and his mate helped/pursuaded them change their mind to fix at no cost to me ;)

I guess the old acronym's should come out now. Fix It Again Tony!

Renault 11 Turbo heavily modded, car hopping was good fun! except torque steering towards hedges etc
Its odd that new hot hatches are generally slower 0 to 60 than the old ones

My early car rosta includes the usual Astra SR, Astra GTE, 205 GTI, Golf Mk2 GTI 16v. Of these, the only one I'd like to own again was the Golf (and even then I'd prefer the Mk1)

Funny how kids driving hot hatches turned into middle aged men with Maseratis. For me that's a journey of 28 years...

Prefer a little left field;
Lotus Sunbeam - GMP had them as traffic cars back in the day
Remember the Dahitsu Charade Turbo
AX GTI - Tin foil car
Fiesta Super Sports
Nova GTE
Escort RS1600i and 1st gen White RS Turbos
Those were the good old days before insurance went silly.

Mini 1275GT - great fun. Wish I still had one
XR2 mk2 - boring engine, very asthmatic
XR2 mk1 - tuned x-flow and good fun, but basic interior and 4 speed
Strada Twin Cam - a bit different. Great engine but rusted to bits at only 5 years old

Then kids and sensible for while.

Best hot hatch I ever had was the Leon Cupra R. Brembo brakes and nylon bushes all round as standard, cheap as chips to buy and far prettier than any golf

Now old and sensible - except when I'm in my Gransport!

Indeed, the R5T was quick but the engines twisted and warped under the heat. Great when working but terrible if not.

The engines in the Uno where bulletproof, but the bodies terrible. Think the last ones where galvanised and made a very durable car.

Like it Beau!

Yes, galvanised from 1990 - H reg as it happens. We had an earlier 45 for a while - rustbucket. I had a 70S for a short while, but went back to an Alfasud after that - a much better car, which, strangely, I still have.

The R5 GT was a great wee car too....rallied a Gr N one in irish tarmac championship in 92 and 93.... got 3rd in the championship N4 class in 93 with steady results in Galway, circuit of ireland (16th o/a), donegal and the ulster rally.... occasionally mixed it with the sierra cosworths in the class....IMG_0927.jpg
