No, I just got one from EuroCarParts - Part Number 20983002.

Its is identical and even made by the same manufacturer (not a pattern)

Cost me £74 inc VAT.

good job with the write up - not sure if this setup is the same on the GS, was thinking if the themostat in mine also needs replacing - I don't seem to have any temp issues as this thread as it is between 70-90

That's an interesting list

The only thing that concerns me is the opening temperature.
All of these seem to be 80C

Does anyone know what temperature the OEM part actually opens at?
Someone with the pukka manual required

The Ferrari 400 site HERE says its 70C

Another site (HERE) that refers to the Behr thermostat and specifically refers to the 3200GT and the Maserati part number say that it is 85 C.

With a quick Google, some of these parts can be 40% cheaper than Eurospares, but I just want to sure I am getting the same thing. :)

Cheers

that is curious- and who'd have thought there was a Ferrari 400 site!?

From my own experience, which is neither on the same car, or actually the same part-

In the good old days of owning Mk1 and 2 FIAT Cromas, I had cause to keep an extra eye on engine temperature and discovered that there were two or three different types of bi-metallic radiator fan switches. One for the CHT and i.e. versions and another for the Turbo i.e. In an attempt to source parts outwith I found a third flavour for the Thema i.e. Turbo. It occurred to me that a variation on standard operation could be chosen by the owner to suit greater mechanical sympathy...

Obviously in this case, with the mother of all turbo cars, and acting on coolant directly it's very important- but then; knowing your own driving style and the climate we have here; given the choice; might we know better??

(incidentally- fantastic photography Cowsurgeon; well done)

that is curious-

I am also wondering where this 70 degree comes form. The manufacturer Behr lists the 85 degree version for the 3200GT and the 80 dgree version for some other (maserati) models. For the 80 degree versions ther are plenty of potental other sources available , only the 85degree seems to be 3200GT specific.

The 80 degree version has codes (is used in cars: (i found also some others compared to the previous list)

Chrysler 04741778, 4741778 TH40980

Hello.I am in need of a new thermostat for my 2002 manual 3200. Today's heatwave has left the thermostat permanently "open". would be interested to know which replacement options have been successfully used. Sniffer mentioned he got an original identical part from Euro Car parts but the part number quoted - 20983002 isn't being recognised on the Euro Car Parts website. Could one of you kind fellows please post details of the original manufacturer and the actual part number of the OEM unit. Much obliged, Sacha.

Hi, looking at thermostats the manual says the original thermostat opens at 85 degrees where the equivalents seem to open at 80 degrees, does the 5 degrees make that much difference as the water temperature is controlled by the sensor and fans etc. Is anyone running one of these equivalent thermostats successfully. Thanks for any advice as the overall instructions are brilliant and thanks for putting them together.

Picked my 3200 up on Saturday (pics will follow) and this looks to be a job I'll need to do.
Looks like eurospares have a few used thermostats @ £40.78 or new ones @ £81.57

Is it a case of buy cheap buy twice or are eurospares used parts tested/reconditioned somewhat?

I'd be surprised if you could re-condition a thermostat. Personally for £40 I'd buy new.

Didn't know the 3200 still used parts from Chrysler :)
Always good to know that

Just like to say thanks to cowsurgeon for going to the trouble of providing the very helpful thermostat change 'How To'.

Due to a low temperature problem, I've just fitted a new t'stat. A piece of cake, thanks to cowsurgeon. The (2001) 3200 GT is now running just on 90 deg. It seems to run smoother now, also.:)

I wonder if I can use an after market thermostat? My thermostat is stuck half open and getting a new maserati one in australia is quite difficult and expensive.

Years ago I installed an additional thermostat into the top hose of a rover 75 as it was running cool all the time.
To fix it correctly required the oil pump to be removed to get to the stat (ridiculous design) so not worth the hassle on an old knacker.
Probably not the best option on a 3200!
