Yup, I've done it. A bit fiddly made more fiddly by the screws/bolts/homes often being broken or not secure or oxidised or rusty. I'm sure Newton did a thread or piece on it.
Basically n/s/f wheel off and liner out. Then I think from memory 2 bolts each side then the back/face end of the airbox wiggles off then air filter can be changed. I had to get further behind to get to headlight brackets etc. but never seemed to be able to get 2nd/back half of airbox out. I reckon it needs bumper off for that...or lift. Didn't have lift at the time I had the project 4200 so was doing it on axle stands.
It isn't a great design but with some patience & careful wiggling it does come off easy enough. Once I had don't it 2 or 3 times I had a good knack.
Did this at the weekend following this instruction, easy enough as described, thanks for the summary
For me it went like this:
Make sure car is in gear / handbrake on / chock wheels on drivers side.
Line up jack.
Loosen wheel nuts.
Jack car, remove wheel and place under sill.
Realise axle stand is too high so put it in a stupid place under ARB just in case, along with sticking some bricks under the hub just in case.
Spray Plus Gas then go off to get tools.
NSF wheel liner is held in by 6 bolts (actually I think 1 bolt and 5 screws is right):
1 points towards the engine and is likely easiest to get out.
2 are near the top, pointing towards the back of the headlight, also easy on my car.
3 are at the bottom, into the bumper. 1 came out, the other 2 looked brown and misshapen.
Not messing about, these aren't coming out - get angle grinder and grind off the 2 remaining screws.
4 bolts on airbox - Plus Gas, wait a few minutes, 3 off no problem, 1 was spinning as the retaining captive 'nut' was no longer captive, but they can slip out the side if you get them loose enough.
Swap out air filter and reverse.
Bumper mounts replaced with rivnuts and SS bolts (plus some copper grease to help prevent cross corrosion) so it's easier next time around.
Car rewarded me with a flat battery despite living on a CTEK - new battery ordered with the money I've saved from the next service
