The little flap that opens the ashtray / cig lighter (Facelift 4200)

Is this meant to come off? Has anyone done it? It looks like it will pop out if you squeeze the hinge pins inwards, but I don't want to break it..

(If you were wondering why, i'm looking at the possibility of changing the cig lighter to a permanent USB socket, but space and angle are tight with the lid in place)

Right, I did that, just risked it and fine! Next question: if I want to remove all that piece, (the whole centre plastic trim piece that contains the cup holder, ashtray and mirror switches) whats the best way to go about it? Does it just pop out? I suppose a flat screwdriver wrapped in a cloth and pop it out from the sides? Or the ends, or corners, or does it slide out horizontally or anything? Again very concerned about breaking anything, like plastic lugs that hold things in place
