Drivers window

Hi all

Just collected the car from getting it serviced and as I turned into home road when I wound down the window it made a sudden metallic ping at bottom of travel that didn't sound great. Sure enough it won't go back up, makes mechanical motor type noises but linkage looks like it has failed. Not an electrical issue.

Did a search but didn't find a precedent - anyone experienced this? Found door card removal instructions ok so may go in for a poke and a prod but any wise counsel welcomed.

Cheers

Snapped cable I think. Hope you have somewhere dry and safe to store it until you are ready to get it sorted.

Thanks. Storage no issue fortunately. If snapped cable it will no doubt be easily spotted once in.

Anyone changed a cable?

I'm sure I reported on this as I had a similar issues waaaayyyy back in 2012!

The window regulator is an alfa part but rotates the wrong way. Search for some of my early posts.

Thanks, “regulator” search turns up a few threads related to the welds failing and how to fix. Will open up the door and see if that is the issue. It seems more likely to be broken weld rather than worn teeth as it was a sudden failure. The thread I found seems to support a reweld as the solution.

Yeah, probably not the cable probably the pivot in the middle of the regulator which is know to fail.

The reweld has had some concerns for longevity given the metal is already fatigued, but I never had to do it. Best of luck

Hi,

Happened to me (2004 GT)

Regulator is Alfa part number 60667936.

Ebay have non OEM items .. but worked ok for me (£130) and still ok 4 years on. Takes an hour or two to fit.

Not difficult - more just time taking door panel off and then lining up runners/glass when fitting new unit (somewhat limited access).

cheers

It's caused by dry window slide felts, putting more torque on the motor drive cables they weren't designed for..

Basically, lube your window lift guides!

Ok, door card off easily tks to great guide. Not a weld fail as toothed crescent still attached so must be internal pivot as suggested above. Can’t quite manoeuvre the motor out (fully disconnected nuts and wires ok) so have given up for now and having coffee.

To be clear is the Alfa part above a fit or is this part of the cannibalise solution where you use bits of it?

Cheers

Regulator extracted now, mistake was window had slipped off guide, cramping room. Moved car indoors and with torch had better view of what was going on. Mechanism / toothed crescent all good so must be motor. Will catch up with local Alfa guy to see if GTV bit available.

Meantime window wedged 95% closed via bar wrapped in padding inserted through hole in door, so shouldn’t go anywhere.

Hoping to reassemble soon. Couple of quick questions:

- what is the grease that is applied to the meccano joints, it is not usual grease - way stickier?
- what best to grease the window guides; grease, oil, silicon? There was no visible lubricant in situ.

Any steers much appreciated, thanks.

Cheers

Almost exact same thing happened to me yesterday in the QP! Wound the passenger window down and it went 'pop' after a few inches. Then nasty noises and almost no movement. Spoke to Vic at Migliore who says it might need new window mechanism. He helpfully suggested that the window can usually be manually dragged closed, which saved me from a potentially VERY wet drive home. Now wondering what to do....

Assuming there is an equally good how to guide, it is quite easy to extract. If you gave it to a cheap local specialist they will do it in fraction of time though.

Good luck.

Anyone have a steer on the greasing questions?? Cheers

You've either stripped the gears off the crown gear or the crown gear spot welds have let go and the entire thing has fallen off.

Very common.

You can rob the parts from an Alfa GTV 916. You cant bolt the unit straight in as it arcs in a different motion but you can rob the motor, crown gear and the microswitches off it.

You need to get the GTV with auto window drop that I think appeared in the later cars. You will be able to see the microswitch on it and should have two looms coming off it, now for the microswitch and one for the motor.

Like this, note the second wiring loom to the micros switch, you could simply use your existing one if its not broke, the crown gear, if required, will have to be cut off (drill 3 spot welds) and re welded to your Maserati one if you require it which is the usual failure where it strips the gear teeth:

Here is an aftermarket one but note the solid half moon grown gear, not sure if thats salvable:
