Fluctuating idle

Noticed this since I got paranoid when engine speed sensor failed and engine totally conked out in the middle of Dublin city.

Now at lights etc I watch the needle like a hawk and I notice on both fast idle (1200rpm or so) and normal idle (about 700rpm) the needle more often than not fluctuates a tiny amount, 10-15 rpm or so, can't hear a difference in engine revs, maybe it's too small a drift, or it's just the needle not the engine.

Is this normal?

Various quick and easy checks you can do, I'm sure others will be suggested.

Has the air filter been (no really actually) changed at the annual?

Check for loose fitment of the MAF to the induction hose to plenum?

At the age of yours, if it has sat wet, Check the hose and pipework of the breather branch off the induction hose?

Turn the stereo up?
