The 4.2 QP GTS only sounds like the 4.7 GTS when the later car has its sports exhaust valves closed. When you press the sport button on the 4.7 GTS and the valves open, the the later car is noticeably louder. (The exhaust on the 4.2 GTS is not a valved system).

But of course, the newer car costs a whole lot more (£10k to £20k more). So if it's noise you want, it'd be hugely cheaper to have the 4.2 GTS and add a Larini (or similar) exhaust. For example, I had Tubi Style back boxes on my black QP and that was plenty loud enough.

Ewan,

Forgive me, but I think I recall a post where you mentioned that there were fewer 4.2GTS QPV in the UK than the later 4.7. I have searched and searched but I can’t find the post.

Hi Chris,

Approximately 40 of the original 2008/9 4.2 GTS cars were imported. Can't now recall how many of the 4.7 versions came in, but they were available for far longer and are more readily available for sale second hand, so it was certainly more.

Interestingly I've had four people view the car with the possibility of it being their first Maserati. Of these, one I'm not in touch with and the other three bought different marques (BMW, Merc). When push comes to shove, they revert to type and go for what they perceive to be the safer option. But I don't really understand it as I see no risk in a £20k QP that isn't present in, say, a £20k S-Class. Indeed, the Merc will depreciate more so may well be the more costly ownership experience.

Of course, someone will come along, and most probably it'll be a current Maserati owner. After all, it took me 15 Maserati's until I found this one! I'm looking forward to taking it to work today as it needs a run out.

Being new, I too had some reservations - a 20k merc is way different to a 20k maser - its going to be a lot newer (model maturity as well as just age) - so some people like the flash toys - cameras, decent satnav, 'modern' shape etc... Servicing is a lot more straightforward, with local dealers and specialists... reliability of the Germans are a consideration... choice of engines, MPG and sub 500 tax... a 20k merc is also a lot easier to dispose of when one has finished with it...

As someone said to me - what could possibly go wrong with a 70,000 10 year old Ferrari! My car wasnt 20k, I bought it because I am intoxicated by the looks and the noise... Im scared to **** of many of the above 'features' but im also soft in the head!

Matt, you don't need to be soft in the head to like the QP. Far from it - by dodging the obvious German bullets and selecting a QP instead you've demonstrated your class and wisdom. It's just that people with both these qualities are thin on the ground.

Basicity, it really means does he have 20k spare in he's back pocket!

Dave (x 2) - I think you chaps may have misinterpreted my post. As far as I recall, Matt already has a nice QP, hence I was merely congratulating him on his good taste and bemoaning the lack of similarly qualified others. Indeed, there's much good taste demonstrated by the contributors to this forum - it's the wider populous that worries me.

Being here in the first place demonstrates a certain class and refined taste, even if a distorted perception of risk does lure some hapless buyers to the soulless world of German anonymobiles. Oh, the Siren-song of mediocrity!
