Rear parking brake Granturismo - Occasional scratching sound

Did you use the scantool to retract the automatic hand brake and put it into service mode or did you manage it without?

I need to check mine so do tell.

Everything just slid or wiggled on and off. Not even any swearing. No scan tool.

you would never get the disks off with the ebrake on!

Loosen the little cable retaining nut below the caliper and you'll have enough wiggle room to remove the caliper without removing pads or other connections. Have a bit of wire ready to tie it up to the spring once lose. It will be interesting to see what yours look like. Good luck!

Ok I’ll give it a go but it won’t be yet as the spanner’s are freezing at the mo :(

The reason I asked the dumb question was purely as I am apprehensive about the tool required for the EBP into service mode but your method clearly works. Thanks.

I too have had a recent scraping sound coming from the rear. Just took the rear nearside wheel and hub off to find a broken shoe retaining spring and shoes with no friction surface at all!

missed this, sorry! that looks awful! There is a mercedes benz rear shoe set that is 99% identical to the maser one. Have a look on google, if you cant find it PM me. The MB set costs about 100 quid.

PS1. Here is is: http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/qp5-2003-2012/83538-parking-emergency-brake-repair.html post number 5

"Finaly found the invoice , the Mercedes-Benz part number for the kit was 005-420-36-20
As I said it contained 4 shoes , 4 return springs , 4 locating springs and 2 adjuster assembly's . The small holes for the retainers were round and approx 3 mm dia , I filed them to be slots approx 3x6 mm as this was what the originals had and it makes it easier to install the springs . With my loyalty discount paid $85 Canadian at the MB dealer "

PS2. About 30 quid for whole set on ebay!

I got a set of pattern shoes and springs from Euro Spares and I refurbished the adjuster mechanisms. The cables needed cleaning out with release agent and lubricated so they ran smoothly again. After reassembly, I got the system recalibrated at Emblem. All up £150. Of course I was also able to clean up the calipers, drill out the holes in the discs (rotors), and repaint the hubs. Good job!

Good job, Moz. Mine failed it’s MOT for exactly that reason last year. It had been squeaking/scraping on and off for a bit. Anyway, inevitably I’d cut the MOT date a bit ‘fine’ and hence needed to get it fixed there and then, which happened to be at the main dealer. Some arguing and wrangling later and I think I was down about £150/200 but at least I had a fresh MOT.

Matt. Those look different to the originals on mine. Different at the end that mates with the actuator and at the other end too (adjuster). Also the return springs are different.

The key is to ensure the cables are serviced as they get bunged up with crud and the return springs aren't man enough to overcome this. Thus the shoes remain engaged with the drum.

Are the shoes of the correct width, they are shown as 25 mm wide, the 3200 shoes are 30 mm and I would have thought they would have been the same or wider.

They should be 30mm wide chaps not 25 and according to the Eurospares illustration's there not the same part either!
