NEC and Birmingham - Where to stay, how to travel

Folks

Lets say someone unfamiliar with Birmingham was going to a show at the NEC on a Saturday, and that they were going to get a hotel the Fri / Sat but that they fancied a night out in Birmingham on the Saturday so didn't want to be too far from city centre.

What can you tell me, how long to drive from the city centre to the NEC, if thats easy enough then first choice would be a nice hotel in the city with parking and wouldn't mind driving to / from the NEC.

Also any nice restaurants? Wouldn't mind something a bit fancy to be honest, somewhere to get glad rags on and have a nice meal / drink.

All help appreciated

Cheers

NEC is served by Birmingham international , you can walk train to NEC without going outside, plenty of car parking though so either option is good .
Can't help with Birmingham centre, last time I visited was 1994 , a tramp asked us for money in the car park but at the wrong time as he'd just had a **** and his knob was still hanging out , probably dead by now though so you should be ok

There is a hotel on the NEC complex right by the concert hall. Was there last week and changed greatly with its ow shopping centre and restaurants. Plus as above good transport network straight into Brum.

Thanks gents, point noted regards tramps, I'll avoid any that have their ***** out lol

There seems to be names of areas like Edgdebaston etc? Any of these nice little areas ?

Would probably be arriving late evening on the Friday sonwill get a city centre hotel with parking, may then jump on the train as read that elsewhere as well, means I can have a couple pints at the NEC

It fulfilled the stereotype of Birmingham at the time , could only have been better if he'd had a welcome to Birmingham sign round his neck

You don't really need to leave the NEC if you don't want to travel, have a look at www.resortsworldbirmingham.co.uk , which has hotel, shops, decent restaurants, cinema, bars and a casino, plenty to fill your time.

Outside of that, easy transport to the city centre, plenty of bars and restaurants in the Brindly Place area, but for something better try: adamsrestaurant.co.uk , purnellsrestaurant.com or in Edgbaston as you mentioned give simpsonsrestaurant.co.uk a go.

If you do stay at the Hyatt, walk along the canal development to the Mailbox, again lots of high-end shops, bars and restaurants to choose from.

Birmingham has moved on a lot since 1994. - We're now all lucky enough to have pi**ing tramps in our town centres, so don't judge on that.

Although Birmingham centre is currently engaged in a £ multi-billion development programme, come have a look, you might be surprised!

Thanks nemcova, I stumbled across Adams restaurant last night that could be a goer.

Think I'm good to go then, might just plump for the Hyatt and then can take it from there, will get the train to the NEC saves the hassle of driving

I usually stay at the Hyatt in one of the higher floor 'Regency' rooms, good views of the canals/Broad Street, plus a free hospitality room for the exclusive use of Regency floor guests, serving complementary drinks and snacks etc. make it a more pleasant hotel stay. Enjoy your trip.
