Buttresses are bolt on, just to keep the profile, not structural.

They would be the bits left as they were cast aluminium.

They were definitely aluminium on my old one. Don't think they were ever fibreglass.

For what it's worth, the majority of that looks like surface rust. As long as it it solid it is a viable restoration. I think it looks a lot worse than it actually is.
