I'll be doing about 10k a year so that's going to be at least one set of tyres every 12 months then

For tyres and brakes it's hard to say depending on how you drive and how much motorway work you do. Rears last 6-8k in my experience and fronts about 12k driven with pleasure!

Went to look at a 2008 GT with 44K on the clock:

1. Drivers side seatbelt clip retainer missing
2. Passenger side mirror adjuster is broken
3. Scratch on boot lid
4. Kerbing on all four wheels
5. Drivers side seat release not working
6. All four brake discs ridged and in need of replacement (and probably pads as well)
7. Drivers side seat back adjustment button is missing
8. Wiper blades need replacing
9. Boot lid gas rams ineffective – need replacing

Would you say these sorts of things are typical?

If you can get it for a reasonable price all that is easily put right. What you need to know is that the servicing and engine has been well looked after.

I'd suggest a cat that needs all of that sorting might not have been particularly well maintained.

It's £30,000. The last owner apparently was some rich dude who had it for 2 years and hardly used it, so I suspect it has been a little neglected recently

I've offered the dealer £27,000 if everything is fixed AND the car passes a comprehensive pre-delivery inspection at Emblem in Poole. I haven't seen the service book yet, but it'll also depend on that being perfect.

It looks nice, not sure where the prices of the 4.2 are at the moment but would think its at the upper end of a 4.2 with those miles and condition.

Get it checked out with special attention to the variations.

you gotta realise that most non specialist dealers cars are direct from BCA and they have gone through no inspections and are put up for sale virtually the same day they are bought, and then sold with a 'AA' warranty which isn't worth the paper its written on, when i was looking to buy one (a 4.2 but then changed my mind to find a 4.7) i went to british car auctions and they were getting quite a few 4.2 granturismos going through, selling for £24-26k then i was seeing the same cars come up on auto trader for £30-35k

this car sounds like one of those.

id buy private or from a specialist like dicky

Yes I do feel a little trepid about using non-specialist dealers, but at this point I'm really just browsing and trying to view a handful of cars to see what sort of state they're in and get a feel for how well they age. In terms of inspections, any GT I purchase will have to be handed over to my tame independent Maserati garage, Emblem in Poole, for a thorough pre-delivery going-over, so that will be covered. Whoever I purchase from (as long as they're a dealer), the Sale of Goods act gives me full cover for 6 months (and yes I have invoked SoGA very successfully in the past) - I never get or rely on warranties, as you say they are not worth the paper they're written on. I am curious as to why you would recommend buying privately though.

Who's Dicky?

few posts above my last post, richard grace

he gets cheap ones now and again, but any specialist like him you want to be using, not just a generic dealer

i bought mine privately, and i say this because the person your buying it from is the owner! who has driven it for the past how ever long, they know the car better than anyone else does, and you can see what kind of life its had, a forum members car for sale would be ideal.

Is the Granturismo a reliable and good drive for a daily?

Yes. Absolutely fine. Never had a problem in my 3 years of ownership.

However servicing is not necessarily every year. It is every 12,000miles or every 2 years. Whichever comes first.

Hi Hoyin. Just wondering if you reckon it's worth doing an oil & filter change halfway between those service intervals? I've only had my Granturismo a year and done 6000 miles. Oil being the 'lifeblood' of an engine as it were, a few quid spent on oil and filter possibly helping to avoid any issues later on in time? Like I said...just wondering.

All the best

I'm doing an oil change between servicing on mine, oil is about £40 for 10 litres so it's hardly expensive

They can take a while to sell but it was better prepared it would surely have a better chance of selling as it is certainly not the lowest price example you will find

I agree it should have been properly inspected and all the issues fixed, but there's no cheaper GT on Autotrader at the moment excluding insurance write offs
