I will be listing the car on Pistonheads within the next week but before I do so, I am reducing the price to just £35,000 as a forum only special deal

You know you want to!

:frusty6: the timing is so wrong. I'd love to buy it.

Very tempting but I'd need to sell my both 4200 & QP for that. Think I'm better staying as I am.

The coffers are running on fumes and just starting another business as well so my focus is elsewhere at mo. Lovely car & price though.

4.7's are very good value compared to 4.2's now. There are several 4.7 cars up at mid thirties, with one higher mileage car at virtually 30. But it's still hard to get a decent 4.2 at much below 30. Strange, as I would expect a larger gap. Early 4.2 cars need to be cheaper. The later bigger engined car is so much better, why would anyone now buy an 08 4.2 for just a few thousand less than a similar mileage 4.7?

I must say I'm very tempted with this particular one, but I really really really don't need another car (or so I keep telling myself).

Not the MCS though, they are locked in at £40k which is why it makes Stuarts car an absolute bargain.

I was discussing the very same thing only yesterday with a couple of people in the Maserati community. A good 4.2 needs to be sub £30k now as a good say 40-50k miles MCS is mid thirties now.

Where? Can you show a good few examples as I'm seeing 4.7 S models at 35-37k and most if not all MCS at £40k.

This is all difficult for us dedicated Maserati owners as we do not want to talk the market down and there is a loyal forum member trying to sell his car.On the flip side we all know that a Maserati is not the easiest car to sell - I've been driving them for 15 years so have the experience. The main issue with the debate here is dealer margin and a lot of misunderstanding as to how much this is. Private sales are difficult and when you look at the likes of PH it is often amazing at how many people think they can sell specialist cars of any make privately at close to retail money. It might happen but it often does not and many of these people quietly trade or px their cars later.I agree that the 4.2 is overpriced in most cases and that buying a car off a forum member massively increases the chances of it being a good one but prices are nowhere near as good as some think.

I agree there could be more of a difference between 4.2 & 4.7. Maybe the only problem is it is only about 30bhp isn't it? If it were maybe 50bhp or more the difference is more marked. That is why many buyers maybe don't want to pay more for a 4.7 or less for a 4.2. Do they really need a 4.7 in the real world. Definitely not in a QP but maybe in a GT possibly.

For me there was an aspect of maintenance costs as well. Some of the consumables (brakes) are a bit stingy.

The car being discussed is one, and there are another two on AT with 50k miles on a 59 plate at £35999 & £36000. Dealers have cars with circa 35k miles sub £40k too. I don't know if these private sales are good cars but they're mid £30k's.

As bigbob says, none of us wish to talk values down. I'm not speaking over where they'll go, just what they're currently advertised at. I believe the 4.7 is well worth the mark up, which is say £4-5k at present. The engines deliver power beautifully with the extra 40bhp, but the main thing for me is the improved brakes and higher spec in comparison to an early 4.2 as well as most 4.7s being a year or two younger. I also think that the 4.7 is far better in the QP. The people who will buy the 4.2 are those whose budget can't quite stretch or who aren't bothered about having more power and improved brakes.

Thanks Dicky....good to know. What were the changes to the brakes? Same across all models?

Six piston calliper front brakes on the 4.7, rear brakes the same as the 4.2.

Also the auto 4.7 allows more manual control than the 4.2 does.

GT Sport has grooved discs also but these cars only started in September 2012.

ADG have two 4.7s - one of each gearbox - at sub £40k retail on 30/35k miles. The MC one has been for sale for ages.
