Car now has a new MOT but I've had an advisory on the front brakes. Ouch !

What's the consensus on whether I get it done and sell as new brakes. I'll need to maintain a high price with this option. But car will then an extremely low maintenance option (all relative ) going forward.

Or discount price on the basis this will need doing soon. Buyers discretion then what brakes they use and who fits them.

I'd prefer 2nd option as a buyer myself as I'd get probably formula dynamics upgrade and get local garage to fit.

What's thoughts on how to pitch this ?

Cheers

Trouble is, MoT stations don't measure disk thickness and compare against wear limits, they go on judgement. So we don't really know from this how close to the wear limit they are. If they are right on it you should get them replaced. If lipped, but with plenty of life left, best to leave as-is and allow the buyer to use them as a negotiating point. The disks and pads on the 4.7 are not cheap - £2.1k just for the parts from Eurospares, though fitting is easy.

I think you'll need to get them done to find a buyer, now the MOT is in the public domain any savvy buyer will check and see they need doing followed by a  when they find the price so they'll have you over a barrel with the negotiations

Lovetts had indicated the front pads were low and suggested they would ideally do discs at same time, but pads being the main issue wear wise. I had given myself wiggle room on the current price on that basis. Rears weren't mentioned as issue on the service. I've had a bit of interest already and mentioned the fronts would need doing.

MOT wasn't due until June but Thought getting new would help sale ( ha maybe not).

as I have a new car on order, I have the fallback option of a trade in come mid may and don't think new brakes will give a comparible increase the value. Which is why I'm thinking leave and offer to discount.

I'd measure their thickness as they've probably got more life in them than you think. I'd only replace now for safety reasons, if they are at or below the wear limit. People buying used cars can't expect all wear and tear items to be new. When I sold my black QP last year it had new discs & pads, new a/c compressor, nearly new tyres, and the clutch had loads of life left. You couldn't fault it but he still knocked me down £500 because it was due a service in 4 months. Everyone wants to knock a few quid off and they'll find a reason for it.

Incidentally, the MoT data is given away by totalcarcheck.co.uk. As it's also on the MoT cert any buyer will see it. The cost I've worked out above is much lower than what a MD will quote to a potential buyer who phones them up. That'll probably start with a 3! Lastly, it's very unlikely that a potential buyer will read this thread, but do PM me if that worries you.

I understand why you got the MOT done early to, hopefully, help. I would not worry too much as private buyers for these sort of cars are often clued up enough to notice these things either themselves, by asking for an MOT to be done pre-sale of getting an inspection.

Despite the above it is never easy to sell these cars privately especially as the mileage climbs. Given the new news it may be easier for you to part exchange or try WBAC.COM or the likes, sometimes they can surprise on the upside. My 4200 was sold to WBAC as they offered a lot more than my dealer and a mate recently had a similar experience with a German V8, albeit by contacting a specialist he got even more than either offer. The thing is a part ex/WBAC will take little interest in the brakes whereas in selling to a Maserati specialist they will take a look and hit you accordingly.

Thanks guys. I knew the front pads were low, DL said they would ideally put new disks on the same time as just under their wear level, so i was mindful of that. But told had enough width to accept new pads but only 50% wear on them so not too concerned about them. But fronts are the hit on these so just have to swallow that one way or another. I've amended the ad to that effect.
ford are coming back to me with a delivery date and part ex price this week so that may concentrate the mind. ive also put it on ebay (with reserve)to see where the market price may lie prior to spending on the brakes.
i would obviously prefer the car sold privately as it has so much going for it with the warranty, variators, service and tyres. it should compare well against any dealer offering.
id prefer the peace of mind the car generally and engine was in good order, especially if a long term buy as brakes are consumables (fronts have only managed 20k !).
we'll see what happens.
With luck ill encounter another marmite lover who says "brown seats ! how much u want" like i did :)

Despite the information being readily available, I personally would not have copied the OPs MOT advisories. This is information, I'm sure the OP could have given via pm and on the face of it, portrays the car as having 'issues' even though discs/pads are common issues with Masers.

I still feel the QP in question is a great price and that FD items are more than sufficient as replacements.

Well talk about faffing about. Having amended my ads to a lower price on the basis brakes will need doing, I then came across a good deal at scuderia for Maserati discs and pads so have gone and ordered them! ill set about amending the ad again before anyone notices ;-)
If anyone is in the market for discs soon give them a bell, there's about £200 off the fronts at present.

Well, it starts with euro. They do only a few parts for Maseratis. However they do sell a clutch kit for mine at £1035, so £776 this weekend. Mine will need one in 10k miles or so, so I haven't shopped around. Can a better deal be had generally? EuroSPARES want £1053 + VAT = £1264.

Was initially a bit gutted having ordered £800 of Maser parts from a MD at 11% off this week. Relieved after realising I hadn't missed out. This makes up for it :)

Well scuderia have finally received the parts and they are apparently
On route to me. So with luck they'll be on the car next week.
The mustang I've been waiting on is at the dealers and they are now pretty keen for
Me To collect. So I've entered the category of motivated seller.

It's currently advertised on pistonheads and I've just reduced the price to 25k
Given the recent spend this has to be a bargain !
If you know anyone who may be interested tell them to have a look :)
