M or not?

I wouldn't want a 456 that was not a Modificato version. The problems with items such as the rear shocks, window lifters and air-con unit in the early cars are an expensive and repetitive nightmare.

The 612 is a huge step forward. For £20k more you get a massively better and more modern car when compared to the 456. Though not as pretty.

Agree re the M designation 456 - which is why I asked - but by then the 550 was out and most M cars are auto (guess you knew that!)

I take the view that for anything to be truely valuable in the future it needs to be both rare and pretty....

It is not an M.

I am aware of the differences and the problems and in an ideal world I would buy a manual M and I should have bought the one I nearly bought two years ago but I didn't.

This car is supposed to have a full Ferrari history and has just had the shocks replaced but also indie specialists can now have them rebuilt for a fraction of the replacement cost and I will be checking out the other problem areas.

The other side to it is I do prefer the look of the earlier non M cars especially the bonnet with the vents which leads to another conundrum, in the future will people want the earlier 'purer' car (which is still not exactly a common car) or the later rarer one. Only time will tell.

A quick aside. Ferraris tend (currently) to be cheaper in Italy than here in the UK, as long as you are happy with LHD. For example, there is an excellent garage near Lake Como called GTO Motors (www.gtomotors.it) that usually have interesting stock. They concentrate more on servicing and restorations than sales, but a nice place to visit and great people to buy from and do business with. For example, they currently have a 575 for sale (in red) that is by my reckoning at least £20k cheaper than it would be here in England.

Thank you Ewan,

I will definitely have a look.

The 456 turned out to be a no go. It did have a big history file but also had the expected issues and the seller wasn't willing to adjust accordingly. Such is life.

I have no problem with LHD and I have had LHD in the UK as a daily driver but in this context my favourite LHD to join my garage would be an Alfa Romeo SZ.

Is the 575 a manual or an F1?

Regards,

Robin

Happy hunting Phil. Take your time mate and find a decent example. As they say, don't let the money burn a hole in your pocket!

For what it's worth I was smitten with the Scag for ages and every time I took a potential candidate out I got floored by the consumption. 9 around town 15 on a run and old tech analogue 575 with tweaks technology. Be wary as pre Sept 06 have slow gearboxes and cost a lot to keep in provenance condition.
Most people who have tried both would say the Mas GTS manual is more fun.

Well I finally bit the bullet and bought a Ferrari F430. 2008 model with more optional extras than you could shake a stick at. It also has Challenge wheels and challenge rear bumper. Low miles and one owner, it ticks all my boxes, now going out to polish it again.

Well done Phil! I'll keep an eye out for you. There's a nice FF not too far from you. Granite-y colour. Getting a bit Italian round here, innit?

And as (other) Phil says... pics, please!

And after that go and get some more flies stuck to it.

Well, never being Ferraris biggest fan, a 430 F1 would do it for me.

I am now a Ferrari fan due to them taking the time to welcome us to Modena, making us feel special, giving us priority parking where Maserati just shunned us, shame on you Maserati!

www.SportsFerrari.com anyone?

That was rather nice at the Casa Enzo Ferrari, wasn't it? :)

If only I hadn't sold my Dino :(

I think I was round your neck of the woods tonight, stopped off at a pub in Thorpe for a drink (just one!) .........although wifey managed two!
Parked at the front and sat in window looking out admiring my full day of polishing it. I even polished the exhaust box as it can be seen from the glass engine cover! Very nice pleasant hour chilling out.

Plan to take pics and post later next week when the final car for the stable arrives. It is an Audi Quattro Sport in Misano Red with Piano Black roof. One of only 650 left in existence.
