My Name is Alan, I bought a 4200 spyder over the Internet, The dealer I got it from said everything worked that this car was in ment cond. behlod when the car made it to me the top don't work. when I press the button to open or close the top the pump runs for about 2 seconds and stop, nothing else..no movement.. I have checked all fuses and I think there are 2 more relays to check that might have something to do with the top.

I can manually open and close no problem, but I would love to get this thing to work like it supposed to. If anyone out there can tell me what might be the problem It will be greatly appreciated Thinking you in advance......

Hello and welcome.

First off which dealer did you buy it from and it does come with a warranty if its a trade sale, so why not get them to fix it?

Here are some pointers as to why the roof might not work.

For the roof to open, the handbrake has to be on and the boot closed. Next the worm gears in the rear deck have to let go. They are notorious for sticking. Does the roof move at all at the rear deck?

Failing that it sounds like the roof is not running up hydraulic pressure, it needs to go to a specialist, where abouts are you located?

Hi Caddy.....can we assume you meant mint condition as opposed to ment(al) condition.....;)

Shame you didn't get an indie inspection, but as Matt ( Conaero ) says, check those few things first and kick the dealers A55!

Hoping its an easy fix and you're back in the saddle pretty soon

Alan, if you bought it from a dealer then it's their responsibility, don't do anything that might make it worse, just call them. If they won't fix it, ask for your money back...Internet purchases especially have a cooling down period and uk dealers should refund if it doesn't work as specified.

If it was a private purchase and you are based in the UK, use the list of independent maserati specialists that's somewhere on the site and find one local to you, they should be able to diagnose & fix quite quickly.

You said you can raise & lower manually - is that using the buttons in the glove box or you mean literally lifting it by hand? If the latter then is does sound broken as the hydraulic pressure should stop that.

Hope you get it sorted soon!

Welcome, as you can see from the above advice the guys on here are usually helpful.

As CB says if you can move the roof without using the manual unlock buttons in the box behind the seats it sounds like a hydraulic issue. Either way get on to the seller, if it was described as mint the roof should work.

Where did you get it? Most for sale cars appear on here in one discussion or another so we might be able to provide additional information.

I tried to get them to fix it, didn't happen, I even made some calls and they told me that I bought it as it was. I guess thats what I get for internet buying. The buttons in the glove box work fine..raise and lower the rear roof and lock the lid for the top..

Hmmm...ok. Maybe a bit more info. If you start with the roof up, start the engine and press the "open roof" button, what exactly happens?

If it's "nothing" then check the following basics
1. Parking brake is on (light on dash either steady or flashing) - the car will only open the roof if it thinks you're stationary
2. Trunk is closed. If the car thinks the trunk is open it will not operate the roof as the cover for the roof clashes with the trunk lid when open. If there is a small image of the car in the center of the dash with a red line under it, the car thinks the trunk is open.

When I press the button to open the roof the pump comes on for approx. 3 seconds then stop, thats all that happens. the light in the dash starts blinking.the top wont unlock or attempt to move.. thanks in advance for all the info.

Well it was a car lot not a certified Maserati Dealer, I couldn't fly to New Jeresy to look at it so I took their word that the car was in good cond.Oh I would like to go there and put my hands around someones neck..I may just have to load this thing up and take it to Atlanta(Dealer)..

I have to raise it lift it by hand, The buttons in the glove box will screw up the window and back down and the other one will lock the Lid.

This one looks like you need to take it to a dealer or preferably a specialist.

If may be the worm gears, these are at the very back of the roof which secure it to the deck.

What happens if you manually take the roof down then press the button to raise the roof, same 3 seconds?

If so it's not your worm gears, more likely to be failed rams or pump which ain't cheap

I would suggest before you start on a long road trip that you check all the micro-switches and ensure all the gears are lubricated properly.

From the sound of your description there is a resistance at stage one which is telling the ECU to stop before the motor bends something. Also in the head-gear there is a strap that is known to come loose which pulls one of the header bars into position; if this is off the roof will stop to prevent damage.

Are you able to operate by hand? If so you should be able to clean all the gears and check for any wear on them which may indicate your issues.
