All information helps. At the end of the day, the GS is the better car as it is the right size for the road if you are in a hurry.

the sport button did nothing material to firm up the handling IMHO (on a 4200).

Pressing the sport button does change things especially at slower speeds and away from tight corners...much more gentle with it off.

At higher speeds and in twisty bits, the suspension seems to stiffen up even in non-sport mode, but you're right, the gearbox is the biggest difference...especially when pushing it as the non-sport mode seems to like changing up for you when the revs get high, which can be confusing when you're half way through a fast corner!

Matt, back in a GS???

Maseratiless at the moment, so yes, on the hunt.

The ironic thing is, whilst I have been prancing around in other Masers since selling the GS some 3 years ago, if I had kept it, it would not have gone down in value at all, madness, yes?

Yup...can certainly notice those differences

I am thinking about going from a GTS MC to a GS. Am I mad?

I had a GS briefly about 5 years ago. Really liked it, thought the drive and the noise were terrific, but mine had a series of reliability issues plus a number of rattles and squeaks that the dealership found impossible to cure. It just became difficult to live with as an everyday car.

Have since always wanted to return to the brand. I purchased my GTS MC a month ago. It is fantastic in so many ways, again a great drive, an astonishing noise, and pretty practical, plus the quality is excellent - no reliability issues so far and only noises that should be there. But it is big. Really big. I live and work in Manchester City Centre and I am finding it large as an everyday car around town. I also wonder whether it is a bit "in your face" for a daily drive.

A GS is quite a bit smaller and less in your face in my view.

So the questions. Was I just unlucky with my GS? Are reliability problems and quality issues actually rare on these cars. My reading of this forum suggests so, but I thought I would ask the question of you owners.

And, will I get used to the size of the GTS MC if I persist with it.

My first post here having lurked for a little while guys, so be gentle with me :)

A big warm welcome to the forum Rwc13..........Are mad ..... well ou know what you like and the GS is a different car to the GT MC......Would I change from one...No....The GS is a great car but as you say the MC quality is better and will be more reliable. For me the MC is one of the best looking cars on the market.......but es it is a very big car....The GS is also a great looking car but to my eye's looking a but dated ...Probably the GT effect.

Interestingly Matt tok his GT MC around Llandow track and said it was beeter than his GS..quicker and handled better.

I think you may have been unlucky with your GS as although you hear of issues they are not as unreliable as the general public think, but they are older now and some may not have been looked after as they should have so buying a good one is harder these days.

I understand your thoughts on the 'in your face' thing and being a big car. Gransports, if properly maintained are just as reliable as a GTS, so get a good one and you'd not regret it, you'd also have £15-20k in your back pocket.

There is nothing wrong in 'going backwards' but you will drop £5-10k on the GTS depending on where you bought it. These cars are big but they are easy to place on the road to my mind. As for the bling factor , what colour have you got?

What a car!
Though, a bit too much black for me to be honest.
And indeed, the GT is a bit more in your face, while quality feel is superior to the GS.

For me the bigist issue, as RWC13 says, are some noises/vibrations that i would like to get rid of.
The gearboxes are noisy (would not know how to improve that) and the torquetubes are vibrating/bearings are humming, some more, some less.
Especially the 2800 rpm vibrations can irritate.
Sometimes you hear comments like " the drivetrain is quite rough" , while only few people know what is causing that.
Most GS drivers take it as it is, and if you drive the car the way it is made for, you will hardly have complaints.
But when you want to drive it soft and smooth, the rough behaviour is coming forward.
Some will say " its a sportscar man, what do you expect!"
That may be true, but if something could be improved, you should try to do so in my opinion.

If my GS stays (tend to do so), i am planning to mount a carbonfiber torqueshaft in the tubehousing.
Such a shaft is very light, very strong and could do without the supporting bearings of the original design.
I am negociating with an USA supplier who provides custom made tubes.
The wobbely thin and twisting shaft with its supporting (and failing) bearings could be dropped at a museum then.

If such an upgrade could be made for a reasonable price, it would mean a huge improvement in driveline noises and vibrations.

In the meantime i still consider switching to a GT.
It has a very quiet and smooth driveline allready...;)
Lets just see where this ends.
