Unrelated problems.....?

I have a 4200 with a manual gearbox.......during yesterdays drive the mirrors stopped adjusting to the "reversing" position, although there was the usual "beep" in the car when reverse was selected. There is power to the mirrors, as they fold when selected but the mirror (left and right) do not respond to the command to change position. Can't identify a fuse specifically for mirrors in the original handbook. Is there a central controller triggered by selection of reverse which also has manual control of the mirror position or is there a specific fuse for the angular adjustment motors ?

Unrelated or not..............at the same time the electric switch control for the drivers seat stopped functioning - well almost. The only one working is the lumbar support - all others are dead. Can't believe both motors have failed at the same time. There is 12 volt into the seat and the passenger seat is works fine. The main fuse to seats is fine. The only other related fuse is for ancillaries (including "seats") eg petrol flap and boot release but both these are functioning.

Wild suggestion...........is there a common "memory module" for seats and mirrors which has failed ?

Any other clues ?

Thanks for all responses.

I've got some memory of faults like that. Think it was a relay in the end.

I took mine to an auto electrician who said he could work on these cars very easily as they were 'just Fiats'. Electronically he was right!

your wing mirrors fold down when reversing?

My M3 used to do that and I loved it. Didnt think the GS did. Will have a play tonight.

It's in the manual under memory settings. That makes it sound like it's tied to memory seats, so will share an ECU...

It is set with the seat memory, at least on the 4200. Set seat. Set mirrors. Select reverse, reset mirrors. Select neutral. Press and hold 'M' and your desired memory slot (1 or 2) until you get a double beep (or maybe a long one I forget)
Hey presto.

Of course, they'll forget at random intervals :)

The mirrors (used to !) adjust automatically when reverse was selected to give a better view of the rear "corners". Swapped the relays C and D (page 163 of original manual) but no different. The mirrors won't adjust by moving the central control either.

Seat heating still operates on drivers side - different relay...........

More checks needed.

Hi Dave,

As Catman suggests, it may be worth trying the re-set procedure. It wouldn't surprise me if your prior settings have been lost for some reason. Italian electrics and all that.

Sure it's a fuse if they won't move at all from the controls. I need another PC to see the manual though.

Dazed, confused but delighted

Check out fuse 41

Pulled fuse 41, 44, 29 - no change. Removed the mirror controller - no faults found. Pulled every fuse there is in the foot well and checked each one. I was accompanied by various beeps, clicks and the alarm going off. Found no faults. Tried the seat and it now works and so do the mirrors.
Delighted that it works - disappointed that I didn't identify the fault. Trust it wont return. Thanks to all and hope it doesn't happen to them.

Had the same fault with mine once, the mirrors dipped but did not return, at the same time the seats stopped working electronically.
Battery reset (isolation switch on and off) solved the problem.

Loose connection somewhere, I guess, but yes irritating.
