Power and gas cut could have been nasty!

Two days ago we had a power cut for 16 hours, and a gas leak at the same time, only 20 yards down the road.
The electric cable melted, next to the plastic gas pipe, which was only replaced a couple of years ago.
Could have been nasty!
I've been reliably informed by my farmer neighbour that the electric was put underground back in 1973, and they have simply cut a piece out and spliced in a new bit, but what about the rest of it?
Who runs a plastic gas line so close to the power cable in the first place?
When everything was switched off, it took them 6 hours before they could dig up the road, waiting for some safety barriers....

Nothing particularly out of the ordinary. There’s no real risk as there’s no oxygen present.

Still a gas leak due the failed electric cable being so close. The gas can still ignite once above the road if subject to a spark!

Just doesn’t happen that’s why you’re allowed them in the same trench.

Gas explosions almost always occur in a building, open trench (gas type dependent) or a service duct

Yes i get no explosion underground, but why have the risk of a failed cable causing a gas leak? In the same trench but they must be almost touching to melt a gas line, that can't be right?
