Passenger window misbehaving

I've noticed that the passenger side window in my GS is misbehaving.

It drops when the door is opened but doesn't shut completely after the door has been closed. However if you then open and close the drivers door, the passenger side window does fully close. Is this normal? If not, then anyone have any ideas as to why?

That sounds very un-normal.

Could be some of the switches, but that issue with the driver's door causing the passenger door to open worries me that the control box may be gone,

Would the main dealer be able to test the control unit when connecting a diagnostic device or would that only show error codes on the main ECU for the engine?

Mine did this today but on the drivers side. I opened the door and the window went all the way down. Shutting it did not result in it going back up. I had to get back in put window all the way up, shut the door and then it came down about half way. Normally it drops thw window a little bit as you would expect from a car without a top frame. But for some reason it now comes down about half way and then when you shut the door it goes much higher! Anyone experienced this too?

Mine does that very rarely. I think it was due to being parked in the cold draining the battery.

I have just done 200 miles in her after complete overhaul. Rolling road etc... Pulling like a train... Leaving exit ramp at a local multi storey this evening and the dreaded CEL and limp mode!

I could freckin cry !!!!

A problem on the driver's window of my 4200 was caused by a defective Window Control Unit (Pt/No 192673) which is in the passenger footwell compartment. On mine aircon water had run down into the unit and shorted out part of the circuit board which was well and truly corroded/fried with no chance of repair. It's easy enough to change but not cheap at over £200, so it's worth checking eBay if yours is defunct.

The problematic passenger window on mine drops correctly, just doesn't completely close as it's supposed to once the door is shut.

Is it relatively easy to access and replace - bearing in mind I'm not a DIY expert...?

Simon

As ever the problem is one of diagnosis (control unit, switches, harness, etc), and this is where a main dealer can change bits until the fault clears; our good friends at Emblem assisted with the diagnosis on mine as they already had the car for other work, and I changed the control unit on their advice. If that is where the fault lies on your car it's not a difficult job to for a non-techy replace it.

If you are taking the car to DL's in January you could ask their opinion (as a freebie hopefully). In the meantime, and before you spend any money, I would suggest checking the location for signs of water ingress first; if the aircon drain gets blocked water can overflow into the footwell and cause havoc with the electrics there. It may also be worth checking the connector for cleanliness and security of attachment.

For access pull back the passenger carpet under the dash, release the panel, and the electrics will be in front of you. With any luck this link will take you to the Eurospares diagram, and the window control is item 1:

Feel free to pm me if you wish, and if I can help I will.

Thanks Phil

I pulled back the passenger carpet mat today and found the panel under which all the electrics sit. I didn't have the time (or will) to open up the cover today but will have a peek under there in the next couple of days.

By way of process of elimination I'm thinking that it's unlikely to be the window switches at fault, as they seem to operate correctly. It could presumably be a faulty sensor on the door, making it think that the door is open, but there is no door open warning displayed on the dash - which leads me to suspect the control unit.

For the sake of £100 I'm tempted to buy one of the ones on eBay and swap out the existing one in the hope that this will cure it. Presumably it would just be a case of unplugging the old unit and plugging in the new - though I'm not sure whether I'd need to disconnect the battery or do anything else?

Might be an idea to disconnect the battery, just to be sure. You're aware there is an isolator switch in the boot?

Other than that, yes, should be plug and play.
