Has anyone tried filling their tyres with nitrogen and what are the benefits??????

The GTR has this as standard

I saw tihs as an option recently when looking into tyres. My understanding is that its thicker than normal air so reduces air leaks on tyres, even small ones. I think its £1 a wheel from Kwik-Fit (who, amazingly, seem to be well priced on tyres).

A little off thread.

I bought a couple of tyres from Joe Bloggs round the corner on Saturday as they were cheaper than I could find on the internet. Seems like I may be using them more often.

I had mine done at Kwik Fit, can't say I've noticed any difference, its supposed to stop (alloy) wheels from corroding due to moisture in air, its also meant to give less change in pressure due to different temperature properties between air and nitogren, I don't think you'll find its any thicker than air...

I was under the opinion that all tyres are filled with Nitrogen. My local tyre guy defiantly does and he is just a small local outfit.

Its just another revenue stream for a small guy, paying £1 extra to blow nitrogen into your tyres when it costs him say 50p, as oppposed to air which still costs him yet he can't charge for it. It does have minor benefits as I pointed out but really not worth it, especially when you fill it with air next time you check your pressure or do a track day...

I was under the impression that they wouldn't lose any pressure at all if filled with Nitrogen. Thing is, air is 78% Nitrogen anyway so is there really any point?

can't see it makes any difference on a road car, like you say it's only an extra 22% of nitrogen, such a small percentage.

Here's my source of borrocks - Kwick-Fit.
========================

Have your tyres filled with Nitrogen and increase tyre life by up to 25%, improve road holding and handling and increase fuel economy by up to 5%!

Filling your tyres with nitrogen may seem odd but that's exactly what motor sport and aviation professionals have been doing for years. Nitrogen is completely safe for use in tyres. By using it in a mixture with oxygen to inflate your tyres the theory is that it's possible to negate the issue of slow deflation, due to the larger nitrogen molecules taking longer to migrate from the tyre into the atmosphere through the tyre wall.

Having a tyre that does not deflate means you will improve fuel consumption and will probably improve safety standards too. It's not yet standard practice but Nitrogen could well be here to stay as a result.

Nitrogen inflation should only be carried out by professionals and should not be directly inhaled.

Just to add my thoughts, nitrogen does not expand with change in temperature in the way that air does so theoretically, the pressure within the type will remain more constant, this is only of real benefit on trackdays etc where overinflated tyres could be a problem, it's not unusual to drop a few psi for a track days ( when filled with air) to help prolong tyre life & increase feel. So if u do alot of high speed driving, track days , nitrogen will help..:)

Yep, you should always take some air out of your tyres after your first few laps on track or your tyres will die...
